Where Do I Get Free Stuff?

2.
Where do I get free webspace for my site?

Answer:
The major providers of free webspace are

The amount of space these providers offer varies at times, but it is between 15 and 150 megs. That's a lot!

Comments:

We use Angelfire, with 50 megs, because their registration is brief, directories are easy to set up, they have great FTP (File Transfer Protocol) ability, and their editor, called the Webshell, is so great to work in. They offer both basic and advanced Editor.

You don't even have to know any html to use the Basic, but it's very limited. With any knowledge of html at all, the Advanced Editor is really easier and better. I've heard from other kitties that they much prefer the the simplicity of the Angelfire Webshell over the difficult yahoo-geocities File Manager. (Yahoo owns geocities.) Also, not all browsers can bring up yahoo-geocities pages because of the Java banners they put on them.

You would also want to read the TOS (Terms of Service) very carefully before you decided to build there. Also you might want to count all the promotional banners and popups on geocities pages, as opposed to one ad on the top at Angelfire. We are not familiar with Tripod's Editor, but we have known humans who got their Tripod websites deleted for very unjust reasons or no reason, so we don't go there at all. We are really very happy with Angelfire, and I recommend it highly.

There are tons of places - our favorite is geocities at http://www.geocities.com or angelfire at http://www.angelfire.com both are very easy to use.

A lot of places where you can get free e-mail addy's also will give you free webspace. Yahoo and I-Love-Cats are 2 of the places where you can get free webspace.

Best try is your ISP provider, then there are the freesite hosts such as homestead, yahoogeocities, angelfire, fortunecity and so on. The major free hosts have extensive advertising and/or limited site size, and are very slow loading. Angelfire* will not let you call for graphics on this site to another webpage, such as those used in a guestbook.
( * note from Jacky: I experienced that Yahoo/Geocities and Fortunecity do the same)

My recommendation is to use a search engine, such as Google and look up free web hosts. Be prepared to spend some time at this and also click on a few members pages to view the sites, and see if there are adverts etc. There are still some good free hosts to be found, but they need finding. Also examine what is offered at the host. Do you need to use a file server to change your pages, or can you upload via FTP? What size web site do you have or intend to have. How much space can you have? Is there a free e-mail address? Do they have other services such as SSI, cigi bins, Guestbooks? Can you use java on your site?

Many of these questions/answers will depend on your expertise and the site design that you have. Sometimes its worth paying for a web host. www.rivalpro.com charges US$5.00 a month and has a fast server and no adds. Its my choice for a site and I have had no problems with this host yet.

Note from Jacky:

Once again: Please, read the TOS of the providers really carefully. Geocities, Angelfire and more providers take the liberty to use all your material (words, graphics and other stuff you provide on your pages) as royalty free.
