Beast Wars Transmetal 2 Sonar
I'm not quite sure what possessed me to pick this guy up. I guess seeing it on eBay for
$2.45 called out to me. "Buy me!" So I bid and I won. No one else bid. I actually had to
pay more for shipping than the actual toy. $6.80. Not bad, me thinks. Well, maybe.
Okay, so now I have the entire first wave of TM2 basics. Aside from Op Minor, who's a lot
of poseable fun (aside from what many will tell you), they are less than impressive. I wasn't a
big fan of Scaram, and Sonar isn't overly great himself. Ramulus, on the other hand, was worth
the $14 I paid for him. He is ultra cool.
Any way, Sonar is a bat. As far as bats go he's a brick. His little useless rear legs
move a bit, his jaw opens and there's a blade on one wing that extends via a hinge joint.
Also, and I don't usually say this, he's ugly. His bat head looks just really ugly. Maybe
it's the maroon chrome and snot green paint on it, but it's just ugly. Ew. Then again,
bats aren't exactly known for their good looks, so I guess I can't hold it against the old boy.
Transformation, whoo, transformation is quite tough. The first time I tried it he was up
there in terms of time with Side Burn and Mach Kick. However, unlike those two who are easy to get
out of vehicle/beast mode, Sonar is tough both ways. His entire back splits apart and his
legs need to twist and be pulled through and all sorts of crap. Oy, I don't feel like getting
into it. Just know it's a pain.
Sadly the end result isn't overly impressive. Two things that keep him from being overly
cool. First his upper body is very blocky with the tracks used for his transformation very
visible and not very attractive looking. Coupled with his skinny legs, you got a fat bat. Ah,
and the other problem? He has no elbows. Yep, after so many years of Transformers with elbows,
this guy has none.
Yeah, so I'm kinda tired and I probably shouldn't be reviewing now, but overall this isn't
the greatest toy. I kinda want my $6.80 back. Sorry, Sonar.
