---He carries the mark of the Severn Consstellations of Suzaku on the side of his neck. He is a gentle pacifist. He is also completely narcissistic, noble, and aloof. Because he is royal, he is hungry for love.
------The above statistics and passage were taken directly from the english translation of the Fushigi Yuugi artbook. The below is written by myself, in summary.

---Hotohori is a kind and loving soul who carries out his job as emperor very well. Konan (as it's reffered to in the anime--the chinese version of this is "hong-nan"), the empire that he rules, is well taken care of under Hotohori's rule, and is a beautiful, prospering city. The man himself is actually very beautiful, in a handsome, yet somewhat feminine sort of way, and upon Miaka's first real meeting with him, she mistakes him as a woman until she feels his chest and finds him 'flat.'

He goes thru a lot of pain for Miaka's sake..

---Right from the beggining, Hotohori has always had a deep love for Suzaku no Miko, and is, naturally, estatic when Miaka finally comes to his world. He wastes little time in declaring his love for her, even though Miaka already has eyes for Tamahome. As one of the seven seishi, Hotohori has supreme swordfighting skills, and Tamahome calls him 'pretty handy to have around.' The emperor is well-respected, even by his fellow seishi, and follows his duty as seishi to the extremes, just as the others do; he wouldn't hesitate to slash himself into tiny pieces, should it be for Miaka's benefit.

---Emotion-wise, Hotohori actually enjoys getting away from being the emperor, sometimes, of which is understandable, since the job can be pretty aggrivating. He tells Miaka that he felt like a caged bird, the way he was brought up, and the seishi explained how much he enjoyed just being able to absent-mindedly look at the mountians in the distance; something he didn't much get a chance to do back in Konan.

Zoning out..Not often he gets to do that at home!

---Overall, Hotohori is one of your extremely-beautiful, long-haired bishouen, who's kind, and ends up loving someone who doesn't love him back. Poor guy. Despite it all, Hotohori is still a wonderful person, always kind, even still to Tamahome, Miaka, the other seishi, and all the people of his kingdom. He's certianly an ideal emperor, who while sometimes feels trapped, has control over things, and knows what he wants, even if he can't have it.
