Viruses

Viruses are the most well-known computer threats by your average computer user, but most of these don't exactly know what a virus is. A computer virus is very similar to the biological version of a virus. As you know, to get a biological virus like the common cold, it is usually carried from one person to another. The computer virus uses the same exact method of infecting new users through other users. The viruses are usually carried from files like word documents, e-mails, certain attachments and many others. Some of the well known viruses are the Melissa Virus that happened in 1999, in which is spread around when users would open a Microsoft Word document via e-mail. Another virus was the ILOVEYOU virus which happened in 2000, where users would double click on an attachment and then sends copies of itself through the victim's address book.

Viruses are actually very easy to deal with as long as you take some precaution. The first step is to NEVER EVER open attachments, documents, programs, anything from unknown sources. Just by doing this simple step you can easily avoid 99% of all viruses out on the Internet. If the e-mail or document looks suspicious in any way, even if it comes from someone you trust, delete it immediately or run a virus check on it. Many e-mail services offer some form of virus scan to check your email and attachments.

Also another good safeguard to protect your computer from viruses is to purchase or download an anti-virus protection software. There usually is a yearly payment for the virus program but it is very cheap when you think of the amount of damage that could cost if all your information was lost from a rampant virus.
