Phishing

Phishing is usually not well-known through the average computer user, but many probably have experienced it before in some form. Phishing is just like what you would do on a boat to catch a trout. You put some bait on a hook and lure the fish into the boat. In this case, Phishing usually involved a live person pretending to be a trust-worthy person and attempt to acquire information from the user. This scam usually comes in the forms of emails stating that they are such and such company and needing a password for some activation or an instant message claiming they are AOL and saying that they need passwords or credit card information for continued service. Also some have even gone as far as creating fraudulent websites of popular ones like Ebay, Paypal, or Yahoo. When users go to these websites off links from emails or other websites, users might think that it is the real website and input information without a second thought.

It is hard to deal with phisher's since they can be very convincing, but one must realize that many companies will never EVER ask for information like passwords or credit card numbers since they have this information already stored away and it is part of company policy not to ask such questions to customers. Websites can easily be spotted by looking at the URL. One might say https://www.ebay.com instead of http://www.ebay.com or even be entirely different URL all together. If required to input information on a website, type the URL yourself instead of following links from suspicious website.
