Basic Security

With all these problems on the Internet, what can one person do to prevent these from occurring? Here are some basic tips to keep your computer virus and Spyware free. First thing to do is to change your operating system. Yes, it does sound rather time consuming and difficult, but it is by far one of the most sure-fire ways to keep attacks from hitting your computer since most attacks are targeted towards Windows based systems. So switching to Linux, UNIX, OpenBSD and others can easily stop many attacks. If you're not interested in changing your OS, you can simply use certain software and techniques to make sure you're not infected.

Remember that Windows Update is your friend. Regardless if you're using Windows or Linux, always keep your system up-to-date and constantly patched. These patches are released periodically and usually contain fixes that can keep the most current viruses and vulnerabilities or what not from infecting you in the first place. Having anti-virus and anti-Spyware software is imperative to make sure that if you do get attacked, you can deal with it easily. Norton Anti-virus and Spybot: Search and Destroy are two of the best anti-virus and anti-Spyware software on the market today. A firewall is also very important to have to make sure that computer hackers can't get into your computer by entering open communications ports. Zone Alarm is a free firewall software but buying a router can easily close those ports.

Changing your password constantly is a must as well. Not only changing it often, but making sure it's a good password. It is recommended that your password is at least 8-10 characters long containing not only letters, but numbers, symbols and anything else you can think of. Using a sentence that has been abbreviated is also highly recommended like, g8lvl60drd, which are acronyms for great (g8), level (lvl), and druid (drd). And last but not least, always make sure that what ever you do, always make sure that you're downloading only legitimate software opening and reading trusted websites and e-mails and always check and re-check attachments.
