Have those two partners in crime, Indie and Rock, had an untimely divorce? Sometimes you must wonder. After all, most cutting-edge, "independent" rock you'd hear today is so in-your-face that you could be forgiven for thinking that the Cookie Monster has found a new vocation as a singer. And if Indie gets any janglier then only dogs would be able to hear it... But there is hope, in the form of four guys from Leeds, hell-bent on breaking into the charts with an overdrive pedal, a copy of the "Four Chord Wonder" handbook and a cocky grin. And how refreshing to boot! Cube know how to write tunes, REAL tunes, with choruses and everything, but they can kick ass too. BIG ass! From Scrounger's distorted foot-to-the-floor crackle and Have Another Drink with its get-to-the-loud-bit intro, through to Get Out and its huge chorus, it's just wall to wall kick ins and heavy guitars. But wait! They can write slower, "sensitive" songs, too! But none of your sell-out pop twaddle either... the huge digression of Piano Song features an orchestra, and Disguise My Youth is as catchy as the 'flu. Two styles for the price of one! Big rock riffs, four chord wonders, mellow chill out guitars and a sprinkling of strings for good measure. The only time Cube veer off their track is when it all gets a bit confusing, such as in Never Let You Down, where they fail to make the impact that you'd expect. So there you have it! Lots of jumping around, but something to listen to when your feet hurt. Buy their records, wear the T-shirt, PRAY they don't get swallowed up by TFI Friday and who knows, maybe soon there'll be more to music than picking one of two sides. After all, a Cube has six. 9/10 Karl Cremin.
