The village of Aperi on the island of Karpathos in Greece

Map of Karpathos Aperi is a mountain village which is located eight kilometers north of the capital Pigadia. If you drive from the capital to the north this is the first village you come across. The village of Aperi dates from the Middle Ages, which was a time of pirate attacks. Aperi lies at a height of 350 meters, is built behind the mountains and is not visible from the sea. It lies at the foot of Mount Hamali, on which are the remains of a Venetian castle. Aperi is one of the largest villages on the island of Karpathos and it has about 400 inhabitants. The houses are generally quite large and well maintained and they all have a red roof. In the village there are many citrus trees, bougainvilleas and flowers. In Aperi you find amenities such as supermarkets and taverns and there are some traditional houses for rent in case you want to spend your holiday here.

Between 1700 and 1892 Aperi was the capital of the island. Now it is still the seat of the archbishop of Karpathos and the nearby island of Kassos. Water flows from the mountains to the sea through the village, and the area is also very green. From Aperi there are hiking trails to various beaches in the area such as Achata beach and Kyra Panagia. From Aperi you can drive a little bit further to another beautiful village which is called Volada.
