Dens are small groups of boys in the same grade, who are at the same point on the scouting trail.

  • They meet together as a den once a week or sometimes every other week (Tigers once a month)

  • Meetings are about 1 and 1/2 hours long

  • They are held after school in a classroom or on the weekends in den leader's homes

  • There are two adult Den Leaders for every den - Scouting has a firm "Rule of Two" requiring two adult leaders for every group of boys.  It wouldn't be fair to ask one person to do everything!

The Pack is the group which includes all Scouts here at St. John's.  We have a Pack Meeting about once a month, usually on the last Thursday of the month.

  • The whole family attends

  • Boys show off the projects they have been doing in their dens

  • They may present a skit or other performance

  • We present awards to the boys who have earned them

  • And we always try to have a few fun things to do!

We also have a number of special events during the year.  Things like:

  • Blue & Gold Banquet

  • Pinewood Derby

  • Cub Adventure Weekend

  • Summertime events, such as Raingutter Regatta, Kite Fly-In, Bike Rodeo

We set up volunteer committees to support these special events, and we hope that all of you will help out.

The framework for Cub Scouting is its rank system.  This gives the boys a structured path to follow and a goal to work toward during each year.  The ranks are:

  • Tiger Cubs (Grade 1

  • Wolves  (Grade 2)

  • Bears (Grade 3)

  • Webelos (Grades 4 and 5)

There is at least one den for each rank.  Right now there are 9 dens that accommodate over 80 boys in Pack 149.

There are two costs to participate in Cub Scouting:  One is a small amount of money, the other is a small amount of your time

The cost to join this pack is 4000 BF (or $110.)

As to time, we'll take as much as you can give us.  Each of the leaders is a volunteer.  We all have other jobs and responsibilities, but we have committed to give several hours of our time each month to provide a fun and positive experience for our boys and the other boys in this Pack.  But for the program to be successful we need many volunteers.

The most important are the den leaders and assistants.  We are fortunate to have a core of experienced leaders, but we need more.

Being a den leader does not require any special talents, just a willingness to commit the necessary time.  There's plenty of help available.

  • You'll be working with your son and a few of his friends

  • No previous scouting experience necessary

  • Den leaders can be male or female

  • We provide training and other support

  • Program resources are readily available
