Species Issues |
Have you been noticing a the new species boom lately. Some of them are just things people havn't thought of and some are just bizarre. Is it right to have strange characters like dugongs, dragons, cross-breeds and more. We're going to address both sides of the story.
One side of the arguement is. All's fair, it a fantasy world, right? I can have whatever character I want, just because you choose a badger, or rat, or a stoat doesn't mean I have to be like you and everyone else.
The otherside is, those characters aren't even mentiond in the book, these are Redwall sites. How can a dragon be in a world full of mice and rats. It's not rodent-like or even Redwall like. Having a special chracter can also give you special RPing advantadges.
We talked to some people on this subject and they told us this:
I chose my species 'cause I wanted to be different. My species is a
dugong, a manatee like creature that lives in the Indian Ocean. Not
many people know about it, and I doubt BJ knows, so, I'm for the
non-Redwall species. 1, my species is non-Redwall, 2, my club has
non-Redwall species in it, and 3, I like people having diversity. Hey,
maybe BJ did put a dugong in one of his novels, like Legend of Luke or
Pearls of Lutra with all the seals and stuff. One of those "seals"
could be a dugong. Ye never know...
-Iggarsen the Dugong of Silverpeak Island
Yes, there are quite a few non-Redwall species in my club. My whole club
sort of non-conforming to the Redwall World on a whole. But as far as
species go, I chose to be a linsang because first, I love 'em, and second
because nobody else online at that time was a linsang. I prefer to be
different. I made Silverpeak Island an Island because at that time, there
were no ROC Islands. My purpose is to be different. I hate conformity.
I don't particularly think that people *should* have species different
than in Mr. Jacques' books, but I don't see a problem with introducing
different species. It livens things up a little bit. I do have a problem
with characters who distinguish themselves by extreme body markings (like
diamond and star shapes on foreheads of mice, multi-rainbow colored tails,
etc.), but I'm pretty open to change! These days it seems, Redwall clubs
seem to be fewer and fewer and RPs are the hot thing. Still, I have a lot of
faith in my club and many of my members (like for instance, Flayyme our
dragon and Iggarsen our Dugong) really appreciate the fact that I allow
their differences in my club. I appreciate it when I see other clubs that
allow me to be my linsang self instead of attempting to become a squirrel or
otter for their sake. It's nice to know that people are still being creative
in (somewhat) realistic ways.
-Bandye Linsang the Linsang, Leader of Silverpeak Island
We went into a chat room at Sampetra: INSU and the general attitude towards non-Redwall species was negative. They didn't think it was fair RPing and it isn't even related to the books.
-Slann, Terrinax, Stray, and Di'estra of INSU
A tough issue. Is it creativity, or is it just to non-Redwallish?
