I was at De La Salle (Hopwood) from 1971 -1974 and studied French and History and taught French In Middleton until reorganization of Rochdale Schools in 1990. I then taught at Hopwood Hall as a French, Sociology and PE Lecturer (Further Education) until 2001. Hopwood Hall College had a site in Rochdale and one on the former De La Salle site in Middleton and one of the conditions that the Brothers insisted on relating to the sale of the site was that it should be used for educational purposes. It was strange teaching in the same place as a former student teacher knowing the stuff that went on there. I left FE completed a PhD at Lancaster and taught and did research at the University of Salford from 2003 until 2011. Rochdale has recently established a Sixth Form College so Hopwood is now a traditional FE College as opposed to a Tertiary College with significant A level teaching. Many of the people I went to De La Salle with live and teach around Manchester and although I have retired to Brittany now I have met them at different times particularly in the Liberal Club at Prestwich Manchester. Denny McKinstry played soccer 1971-74 Michael (Mickey) Stevens from Whitehaven played Rugby and cricket Kevin (Korky) Cunnigham played Basketball Davy Lonnigan (Scotland) played soccer Phil Niles (Doncaster) played soccer Paddy McCafferty (Derry) tried to play soccer Leo (Korky's mate) played basketball Jimmy Digney went home to Newry and taught. Hugh Dowd went home to NIreland Paddy Moran went home to NIreland PJ McGowan went home to Donegal (Chair of Donegal GAA)

I was a student from '72 to '75 reading Chem. Biol. and of course the all important Education not to mention Divinity. My first memory of the college was a banner strung across the main entrance saying " Welcome to Butlins". In the 1st year I lodged at Harefield Hall along with about 50 other students under the watchful eyes of Mick McLaughlin, Eamon Diver (pronounced --De veer !!!)and Myles Nolan (student wardens) ; Mrs Doulson provided the food. The Red Lion was more or less the local but the Seven Stars occasional got a visit. Certain pubs were certainly a no go area for rampant students . The Engineers rings a bell as being a 'rough' pub !!! Fond memories of trudging up the back lane on a cold winter's evening from college to catch the Heywood bus !! 2nd Yr I was on the 3rd floor of Our Ladies Hall with an excellent view point to observe the 'ladies' trundling home on a Sunday morning after a 'night on the tiles'. In my 3rd Year I lodged in Bishop's Court with a good bunch of lads --nearly all Harefield Hall students !! Got a teaching post in Rochdale and stayed in the district until 2010 when I moved back to Ireland. Over the years I witnessed different developments taking place at the college e.g. the removal of Parkside to provide space for a sports complex and of the slight deterioration of the Hall itself not to mention the Divinity and Art Blocks demise. Thoroughly enjoyed my holiday at Butlins !!!! Feel free to contact me ---certain students I can't trace at all !!! I'm retired now and have no other commitments !!!!!!

Hopwood had about 120 students in the early fifties. My subjects were Music (Cyril Crabtree Esq.; Mus. Bac.); French (Bro. Gregory); English Lit. (Bro. Hilary); and of course everyone studied Scripture and Doctrine under Bro David. Thinking of Bro. David with his patriachal shock of white hair, reminds me that when in lectures the fairer sex were mentioned, he would utter "Perfidious 'craturs'". My first teaching post was at St Dunstan's School, Moston, Manchester and there Bro David came to tutor a lady student on "teaching practice". I stood near the Staff Room door as our charming Rev Bro beguiled every lady teacher during morning break; and the ladies in turn plied "Dai" with biscuits and refills of coffee. As Bro. David left the Staff Room, in opening the door for him, in a 'stage whisper' I muttered "Perfidious 'craturs'" which elicited a laughing "Thank you Mr Murphy" from our Revd. Brother. In all I taught for 62 years having obtained a "cap and gown" in music (A.V.C.M. Hons) in 1946 and in "retirement" teaching English in Biarritz until 2008. Being 80 myself, and when a student at Hopwood I was with a number of chaps who were mature students, having fought in the war; so there may not be many of us around; but if this jogs the memory of any contempories, I would be pleased to receive an e-mail. Salus Indivisa Manent!

Hello anybody, I was there 85 - 88 as a combined studies student. PE and Design technology. WAS going to be a teacher, and possibly should have become one. A great nostalgic memory like one of those American "in the summer of ..." movies. Enjoyed myself, but would have enjoyed myself more If I went there now! I remember the sometimes strange coexistence of the brothers beside us, I remember "Our Lady's Hall". and my initial concerns that they had wrongly put me in the girl's dorm. I then complained about the old style round pin plugs in our ladies hall, and the hammock like beds - and I took for granted the campus provisions of room and food. In PE I will never forget the smell of the PVC type indoor sports hall, the competitive atmosphere, and all the maniacal fitness training. In Design Technology, I felt that we were really cutting edge, and we did seem to produce some impressive work. Mike Hubbard

I was a mature [?] student [aged 27/28] on a one year course for students with industrial experience and qualifications. Intending to become wood and metalwork teachers, qualifying within the one year of very intensive study, under the care of Joe Maslin, head of department with a philosophy in design education that was ahead of its time. There were only five of us on the course which included two teaching practises in Salford, educational studies with Dr Casey and practical as well; as academic projects. [three years would have been more worthwhile] I taught for 18 years in Bristol and Kent, changing my directions in later life to technical illustration. Of the five on the course three of us resided in one of the Bishopcourt blocks, whilst the others lived within daily travelling distance - fellow student Mike Dale was later ordained as a Deacon. I am still in touch with Harry Wilson [Wigan] and Glynn Trevor [Wrexham]. Lasting impressions of the college, and the student body, academic mass, the brunch in the refractory on Saturday morning, the wild disco nights, the wind swept landscape and those buildings black with soot, strange, to someone from the south. Any student from my particular training in wood/metal who would like to contact me, my e-mail address is austindavis911@btinternet.com

G’day everyone,-I have good memories of my association with people who wanted to spend their time discovering stuff, without being distracted by work – and in ’72,   I was proud to be associated with the students who came after me.  Late one night I came across them, mounting a Protest Vigil about the Bloody Sunday murders.  They were gathered around Queen Victoria ’s statue in Piccadilly, Manchester – twas a time in Manchester, when protesting about the war in Ireland was unfashionable. During the next 40 years, I learned to play the 5 string banjo (thanks to Pat Kearney) and have just wandered inside from strolling along the beach at Manly, Australia – My regards to all my mates who persevered in that vineyard known as Hopwood Hall   Andy Cathcart

Hi, I just discovered your page and it brings back happy memories. I attended Hopwood 1969-71.  I am now living in the West of Ireland in a town called Castlebar.  I am semi-retired due to ill-health but teach part-time in our local secondary school.  I studied Divinity, under Bro. Albert and History.  I have maintained two very good friends in England, Pete Lawrence and Tom Clarke.   The three of us made a trip back about 6 years ago.  We even found Harefield Hall, where we spent our first year. Another student of that era, Gerry Kelly, made it big with U.T.V. where he hosted a weekly Friday chat show, very popular in Northern Ireland.  I also bump into him from time to time.  Well done for maintaining this web page. Hi, my name is Greg Dougal (from Scotland) and I was delighted to see a website with information on Hopwood!  I was there from 1969 to 1972 and had a great time.  Does anybody remember 'The Greg Dougal Glory Band'?  We played a lot around the area after we were caught trying to get into the folk club without paying and were 'invited' to perform.  Members of the Band included Pete Morris, Ged Balmer, Mick Taylor, Chris Taylor, Ed Cava, Eddie Owen and Mike Suddaby.  I'm still in touch with Pete, Ged and Mike. ; A group of us attended the reunion and spent some time in the Boar's Head catching up.  That was great, although it was sad to see what had happened to the old place.  Sadly Ed Cava died shortly after we attended the reunion following a prolonged illness.  He is missed very much........

Great to discover the website. Reading the messages many memories come flooding back. I was a PE student along with Paul Enright, Chris Riley, John Fullerton, Tony Jackson, Neil McLoughlin, Eric Craven, John Murphy, ? McKevitt and others. Lecturers included Messrs Woodward and Deasy. Student life kicked off with the Freshers Ball featuring Mungo Jerry I remember the long drive from the road. However, this was compensated by the short walk from Bishop's Court to the bar. Then there was the weekly Sunday Evening discos with a coach arriving from Sedgeley Park. The last song was always 'Stoned Love' by Diana Ross (how appropriate). There was a pub Brown Cow, off the beaten track, in the direction of Castleton which was paid a few visits. Another recollection is Hugh Dowd, while at college, playing for the college team and in his spare time warming the subs bench for N. Ireland at Wembley against England! Saw him play for Sheffield Wednesday against Chelsea when he left college. I have remained in teaching. I returned to London and in '87, I retrained in ICT. Since then overseen ICT in different schools in London. Looking back, what stood out for me was the friendliness of everyone

In my first year I stayed in 'Gairloch' in Blackley. My second and third were spent on campus - Our Lady's Hall and J Block. I played for the Rugby League and Gaelic Football teams. I played in the first ever Rugby League match to be allowed on the campus. I have been back to Hopwood twice. Once on a 'down memory lane' visit and on another occasion I took my class from N. Ireland to the Bobby Charlton School of Excellence. I spent many a pleasant evening in the Britannia and Boar's Head. In my third year I mounted a late campaign in the presedential race for the Students' Union. I was narrowly defeated - or so I think !!! I am presently principal of a primary school in Killough, Co. Down.

Regarding John Walsh's comments of 25/9/05-the name of the pub he can't remember is the' Ship'.  My friend Andrew and I usually do an annual pilgrame to this attractive little pub by the canal.  During our time at the college (1977 -1981) we too spent many a good night there!  Though we were just as likely to be found in the Boar's Head in Middleton, a rather more expensive joint.

Further to my last message in April, I remember the following people at De La Salle and often wonder what happened to them all.  Most of them I knew from Cheetham Hill, they are: Tony Foster, Steve Bedingham, Mark Archer, Pete Donaghy, Gerry Fullen, Dick O`carroll, Martin Donnelly, Wayne Ford, Mike Agios, Pete Guinan and Hugh Vaughan. I know Pete Donaghy got a job in Middlesbrough because he beat me to it.   I was glad he did thinking back!   The last time I saw Martin was at a Coventry City match against Wolves in the late 70`s.   We won of course 3 - 0, I think it was.  Dick, I last heard was teaching in Dublin.  I last saw Gerry in Ipswich of all places again going for a post but neither of us got it.   As I said before, I only spent a short time in teaching.   I now manage a centre for severely disabled adults in Coventry for Coventry Social Services which I find very rewarding indeed.   In fact, I use my teaching skills now more than ever so nothing is ever lost.   I probably use them more for staffing issues than with service users but then that’s the way of the world! I also remember, with much affection, a lot of the pubs in the north Manchester area.   Who could forget the Kildakin in Cheetham Hill also the Wilton in Castleton.   The landlord there as a very genial Irishman but the beer was awful.   The one pub I cant remember was the one at the top of the hill as you turned left out of the main gates.   It was a John Smith`s and i recollect spending many a pleasant hour there usually singing with Steve and Tony among others.   Anyway, I will stop now and give someone else a chance.

In my 1st yr, I lived at George St, Cheetham Hill in Roy Sutcliffe`s house with about 12 others.  While I enjoyed my time at the college socially I found it was a complete waste of time for me career wise.  I thought the 3 years could be done in 1 looking back!  I did a bit of teaching in London but came back to good ol` cov where i`ve been ever since.  I`ve spent the past 25 years in social care work which is much more up my street, but I do admire teachers and the tough job they have today.  I`ve met one or two people since I left but have not been to Manchester for nearly 30 yrs.

I attended Hopwood from 1965 to 68 and had a great time.  I was a music student together with Norbert Potter who has emailed his memories further down this page.  Michael Callaghan (now sadly dead) was in charge of music, with David Bentley - but who was the lecturer before David? was it John Unsworth?  Anyone remember him?  He lived in Old Glossop but only stayed at Hopwood for a couple of years.  I remember a college "dance" with Unit 4 Plus 2 as the main attraction.  We were all condemned the following Monday by I think, Bro Thomas, for "fornicating to the sound of distant guitars"!  Chance would have been a fine thing!  Are Mike Flatley or Mike Slattery still around, if so, please email me.  After years at Cardinal Langley (59-65)  I have a lot to thank the brothers for, even though I left teaching to become a musician!

I attended Hopwood 1977 to 1980 and I found campus life very conducive to study and learning, an absoulute contrast to the bleak and hostile streets of N Ireland during those troubled times.  Thankfully, I escaped for three memorable years at Hopwood.  I doubt anyone will remember the 'quiet studious' Irish lad I then was nor my equally shy Mancunian mate Mick Dunne.  However anyone with eyes and ears and who was around at that time will remember our constant sidekick Andrew 'Andy' Parkinson, a well known Welsh lad who spent at least the first year dressed in his postmans donkey jacket and trademark cowboy hat.  There were many others of course, very agreeable people, whom I have long lost, touch with as time has past.  It would be nice to hear from others from that period to see how they are doing.  Anyway after twenty odd years or so I am still in touch with Andy and Mick and anyone who would like to meet us in Manchester or its environs for a drink sometime, just leave a message for me Tom Muldoon on the message box.

I studied Drama at Sedgley and also at De la Salle.  I had the best time of my life!!  I worked on the bar at De La Salle and supported the Rugby League team.  They were not allowed to play at the college and we had to hire a pitch in Rochdale. Rugby League players were not allowed to win college colours at first.  Real Class discrimination. Lots of Welsh students used to play League at college and union at home before it was allowed to play both codes.  I remember Andy Fairweather Lowe playing at the college and Horslips.  Everyone went wild when they played.  I remember Mike Cockett and Clive and Julie the Drama lecturers loads of students from the North East studying Drama.  Who was the South African Rugby Union player who played at the college in about 1976/77?  I was president of the Student Union at Sedgley Park for 2 years.  I would love to hear about how Dave Bridges who was Captain of the Rugby League team is doing.  Anyone remember those times? Carole (Fitzhenry)

I attended De La Salle from 1973 to 1976 studying to be a PE teacher.   Happily I succeeded and then got into special educational needs eventually becoming a Headteacher.   I vividly remember Frank Jordan and Jim Hawkins who were two of the PE staff.   As a subsidiary I studied Drama with Mick Windsor and the girls from Sedgely Park as that was a mixed course back then.   During my first year I stayed in Digs in Castleton and then moved into Queens in my second year.   The rarity of tutorials in the third year meant I could commute by motorcycle from Liverpool on the two days I had lectures.   Good friends were, and still are, Pete Docherty who was then one of the Brothers and John Fullerton from Donegal.   I remember also the bands the Student Union engaged particularly Horslips.  Good times.

I was one of a handful of American students who spent a term at De La Salle.  We all were from Saint Mary's College, a Christian Brothers college in Winona, Minnesota.  I recall there were eight of us who arrived in October, 1980, four women and four men.  We gents lived in Our Lady's Hall where we turned the showers into a sort of improvised sauna in an attempt to get warm in that chilly building.  A highlight of our short three months visit was a celebration of the American Thanksgiving holiday.  I regret having lost track of the friends I made there.   Perhaps this website will help me find them again, even after 23 years.   I now work in Washington, DC in the White House neighborhood, and I live in Columbia, Maryland.

I was a student in Hopwood from 1971-'74.   During those years I had a good friend from Crewe named Colin Gill.   He was studying French and History.  Unfortunately, we lost contact with each other and I would like to hear from him or from another friend from that time: Eddie Gaygo (London)   We were all in the same year and spent 1971-72 in Harefield Hall.   Another friend from that era was Chris Ennis from Doncaster, Yorks.  Colin, Eddie, Chris, if you come across this, please drop me a line.

My enduring memory is of the deep snow and bitter winds off the Lancashire moors in the winter of 1951-2 as we First Years tramped from the bus stop on the main road down the long driveway to the old Hall.   At that time First Years lived in digs in and around Middleton and Second Years lived in the beautiful old Hall.  Most students were recently demobilised servicemen but, nonetheless, the rules around College were pretty rigid.  There were only about four lecture rooms and a gymnasium below the Hall, a Chapel and a few out buildings and, of course, the Old Boar Inn.  Bro Augustine was Principal and there were only sixty-five students in each year in the only course offered, i.e. Teacher Education.  Food rationing was still in operation and the meagre rations in the Refectory leave another enduring memory along with a more pleasant one of the magnificent rhododendrons in the grounds.  I live, retired from my last post as an academic teaching at Edith Cowan University, in Perth Western Australia, in my home about three kilometres back from the Indian Ocean and today is around 30 degrees Centigrade but still I can feel a shiver in remembering that cold winter, but I remember also the warmth of the relationships among the students at the time.

I recall taking part in Songs of Praise from the College Chapel during Lent 1967 and a couple of years later also participating in the radio programme Sunday Half Hour.  That was my last visit there although I did meet one of my former tutors, Michael Callaghan, at the real Old Trafford (Cricket Ground).  He was 75 at the time and looking extremely well and fit.   Whatever happened to the organ from the chapel?   From Norbert Potter - one of the first organ students at Hopwood.

I was a student at De La Salle College, Hopwood Hall 1982-83. At that time I used to stay at Cardinal Langley School just across the road. Although twenty years have gone by, I still visit the Brothers who used to teach at Hopwood, including, Bro. Ernest (Physics lecturer), Bro Wilfred (Principal). In fact, when I travel to the UK I make it a point to see the Brothers in their communities. Hopwood was a wonderful experience. Thanks to all the Brothers...

I was most interested to find your web site about Hopwood Hall.   Bro Augustine was Principal then, with Bro Hilary as his deputy.   As First year students we lived in the old Hall, with Bro Patrick as Warden.   Rules were a lot stricter than they would be today, most nights we had to be in by 10 pm, extended to midnight on Fridays, and 11pm on Saturdays, or we would be fined half a crown (12 and a half pence!)   I remember the start of The Spinners - they were a skiffle group then, Mick Groves, Tony Davis, and two or three others.   Only Mick and Tony remained to become "famous".   I am still in touch with Gerry Mills from Liverpool, who was our year social secretary, and turned down Jimmy Saville for one of our dances at Pendleton.   Sadly , today, I heard from Gerry and learnt that Ken Tyrer had just passed away.   Others that we know who have passed on are Pete Heary and Jim Hanley, Liverpudlians, and a special friend, Chris Simmerson from Sheffield.   One person we would like to find from our time there is Bob Suret from Birkenhead, who disappeared after College, but also anyone else from our particular years.

Hello, I have just discovered your web site on Hopwood and was fascinated.   I am from Ballymena in Northern Ireland and was a student at De La Salle from 1969 to 1972.   I would be delighted to hear from other students from that time - even the Sedgley folk!   I was the Secretary of the Students' Union 1971-72.   Are there any other Exec. members from this time out there?   I am currently teaching in St MacNissi's College on the Antrim coast.

I am very pleased to find your site on the internet as I was one of the first students to train for teaching at De La Salle College, Hopwood Hall 1947-49. There were only 60 students on roll.  I was present at the official opening of the college by Cardinal Griffin and had the privilege of serving Mass for him in the small chapel in the house.  In my first year I travelled in to the college from Bolton each day, but was fortunate enough to live in college for the second year.  I occupied a room in Hopwood Hall, which I shared with two other students. We had a pleasant oblique view from the window across the formal gardens towards the site of the present chapel.  Ten years later I returned to the college for a One Year Supplementary Science Course again attending as a day student.  I have many memories which I could perhaps share at a later date.  I would love to hear from any fellow students from those pioneering days.

My father taught PE at Hopwood 1947-77.   I spent lots of my childhood at the college.   35 years ago it was all so open and fantastic for a child to roam around.

Clive Hadfield who also worked in Drama has since retired.
Bumped into a couple of ex-Hopwood drama students in London, who both seemed to be doing very well, working in theatre.
As might be expected most students went on to be teachers and its a while since i've had any contact.
I have extremely happy memories of my time at Hopwood Hall.   I was there for about three years in the early 80s.   I found the staff and students to be very supportive and great fun.  The best times were in the summer when we use to set up a show touring infants and primary school, it was hard work but worth it.

The group “The Spinners” began at Hopwood Hall.  Not sure of all the band members but Mick Groves was one of them.
Wilf Lord captained the rugby team in 1957-58.  Alec Hurst played fly half and I played as full-back.

I went on to teach English at De La Salle, then English and rock-climbing at the Conway in Anglesey and Leicestershire.  Now retired managing holiday accommodation in Cornwall.
