Kenyon House Map        Picture of raspberry and lavender Queen Anne porch

The neighborhood was all farmland when developer Eugene Kenyon laid out the streets north of Farmington Avenue in 1870.  He built his home on what is now the corner of Kenyon and Farmington, but the economy tanked, and the neighborhood didn't take off until the mid-1880's.

Two of the original farmhouses from the 1870's remain in the middle of our block.  Most of our homes were built around 1900 near the end of the Victorian era, when free-form Queen Anne mixed with Colonial Revival and Shingle was the style.  1908 is the youngest Victorian home on the block - over 100 years of history.

Click House Map to see each of our homes and the year the building permit was taken out.  You can download the photos.

Room-sized front porches bring living and the neighbors outside.  You run into neighbors walking to the avenue to run an errand or eat a meal.   Neighbors on Kenyon get together as a group about every other month.  Twice a month the gardeners gather to share info and plants.  When an issue is hot, the e-mails fly!

Click Event Calendar and Garden Walks to see what we're doing on the block.
There are photos of past events on Photo Gallery  and Garden Walk Photos, too.

West End Tags     Picture of black urn with purple pansies

Again for 2009, the West End Civic Association is sponsoring a neighborhood-wide tag sale.  Some of the proceeds are donated to local education, public safety and food pantries.  Rain or Shine!  Loads of  houses all  with treasures you can't miss.  Our goal:  to expand beyond our borders!

Turns out our wide front porches are perfect for tag sales.  Fourteen houses on Kenyon turned unneeded treasures into cash, and buyers loved walking from house to house on one block.

For the latest details on this year's tag sale and photos of our first event, click on Tag Sale.

Knox Tree Planting    Picture of neighbors planting trees

On Earth Day- April 22, 2006 over thirty neighbors and friends came out to plant 25 trees on Kenyon Street.   We have new lovely maple, cherry,  crabapple, Ginkgo and Katsura trees gracing Kenyon's first block, thanks to Doug and the  Knox Parks Foundation and their program: Trees for Hartford Neighborhoods!
