Gardening information-August

Now that August is upon us, there is still a lot of things you can be doing in your yard & garden. First off--if you haven't fertilized in a month or so, do so now. That way you will be able to fertilize again in the early fall. Try using a slow release fertilizer--it should last 2 to 3 months, then you can use a lower nitrogen type fert in the fall. If your lawn is brown in spots--check your watering coverage, if your lawn looks browner after you mow it--then it needs some fertilizer. Now is the time to plant your fall crops( if you live in the lower elevations of Southern Oregon). You can plant--Carrots, Garlic, Cabbage, Lettuce, Radish---anything that doesn't take too long to mature(except garlic) and likes cool weather. Start pinching off the new growth of tomatoes( this will put energy in to the tomatoes themselves and help them ripen faster. Remember to pick your Zucchini before it gets too mature( they get hard and bitter)---Have fun with the fruits and vegi's of your labor
