Willam was born the fifth child and the fifth son of Anthony and Susannah Cole on December 17, 1831 and died on June 27, 1864. On January 28, 1856 he married Margaret Lewis (ca. 1840-?). They had 2 children. Confederate archival records show that he was enlisted by Captain (later Major) John W. Graham on either May 9th or July (, 1862 in Raleigh, N.C. Medical records show that he was admitted to the C.S.A. General military hospital #4 in Wilmington, N.C. on March 7, 1863 for "Febris Typh. (thyphoid), also listed as "anarsaea?". He received a 30 day fulough on April 19, 1863. On a company muster roll dated July and August 1862 William is noted as being "sick in hospital at Goldsboro since August 20". The last record for William is a company muster roll dated Febuary 29 to June 30, 1864. On it he is said to have been wounded in the thigh near Petersburg, Va. on June 18, 1864. He later died in General hospital, Petersburg, Va. on June 27, 1864. The medical term for the cause of his death was :v. sclopeticum".
