Through the centuries the COLE family was affiliated with many different clans through marriage. The clan MACDOUGALL claims the COLE family as a sept or directly affiliated family, entitled to clan rights including the use of the clan tartan. The COLE family first appears in the records of Cornwall where they were recorded as an ancient Cornwall family before the year 1100. The notable COLE family is shown in the ancient manuscripts and cartularies as tracing their ancestry to Cornish origin. The most ancient COLE family Coat of Arms was recorded between the 12th and 15th centuries. This site is dedicated to the Cole's of the past, present, and future. Throughout this site you can read all about our (and maybe yours too) local history. Many of our kin fought in the Civil War. Some were captured as pow's,some were wounded or killed, while others went on to carry out the Cole famliy name. The eight generations of Cole's you will find here resided in Durham and Orange counties in North Carolina, taking us back to 1804.
