How to Make Lip Balms

Making lip balm is fun, easy and always appreciated as a gift. It only takes a few ingredients and a little bit of time. The recipe from Rainbow Meadows is my favorite, but there are lots of great recipes on the net.

Basic Lip Balm (Courtesy of Rainbow Meadow)
1 oz beeswax
1 oz apricot kernel oil
.7 oz avocado oil
20 drops essential oil
Makes about 12 tubes

Assemble your oils and beeswax.

Measure your ingredients (except for vitamin E  and essential oil if using) into a pyrex measuring cup which you will use as a double boiler. I generally use a wide bottom measuring cup so that the ingredients melt quickly and evenly.

Melt over low heat.

When melted, remove from double boiler and let cool slightly. As it cools, but before it starts to solidify, stir in vitamin E, essential oil or flavoring if using. In the recipe above, I add about ½ tsp. Vitamin E for it’s lip-soothing properties. It isn’t necessary.

As long as you keep the ratio of oils to beeswax the same as the above, you can play with the oils in the recipe. Some of my favorites are meadowfoam and hempseed oils.

This recipe is ideal for tubes. If you’d prefer to use tins, increase the liquid oils a little bit. Pour into chosen containers. What I find to be the easiest way is to spread out waxed paper on the counter and pour into tubes. Some people band a group of tubes together or use cow syringes to get better aim. I just accept the fact that I am going to have spills and pour as carefully as I can. Be sure to wipe the tubes then refrigerate until using or giving away. Technically, these are considered a cosmetic, so please be aware of the FDA requirements if you want to sell these.
