Mailing Lists & Newsgroups (Usenet)

What are Mailing Lists?
A Mailing List, is a community of like minded individuals, who communicate with each other via e-mail. When you want to send a message to the list, instead of having to send it to everyone, you just send it to the List's Server (a computer) and it will send copies of your message to everyone subscribed to that list.

To join a mailing list, you will need to subscribe. Usually this involves sending an e-mail to the list's subscription address, or subscribing via a web page. Then, usually you will receive a request to confirm that you want to join the list (as a security precaution). Finally, you will probably be sent a Welcome Message which contains information about List Commands, and the List Rules. Make sure you read this and keep it safe for future reference.

Usually Mailing Lists can only be read by those people subscribed, and have one or more people running the list and keeping an eye on things, so they tend to be more private and secure than Newsgroups, and because of this, tend to have a 'cosier' feel to them. However, some of the CFS Mailing Lists, such as CFS-L, are 'gated' to Usenet. This means, posts made to these gated mailing lists can be read by anyone with Usenet access, even those not subscribed to the list.

[ INDEX | GUIDELINES/RESOURCES | HOME ]

What are Newsgroups (Usenet)?
In a way, Newsgroups are like Mailing Lists in as much as there is a central point where you can send your messages (articles), so that everyone on the Newsgroup can read them. However, Newsgroups are not private, and can be read and posted to by anyone with Usenet access. Not only this but articles sent to Newsgroups are publicly archived at places like DejaNews, so everyone in the world has access to anything you ever post to Usenet.

Some of the following CFS Newsgroups, are actually mailing lists, 'gated' to Usenet. What this means is that they work just like a mailing list, and you can receive your messages via e-mail if you want. However, you can also choose to receive your messages through the Newsgroup instead. Unlike normal Newsgroups, you will have to subscribe to these 'gated' Newsgroups. Therefor, although anyone in the world can see your posts, at least there is some control over who is posting to these types of lists.

Although you can use web based services such as DejaNews to view and post to Newsgroups, you are far better using Newsreader software. Newsreaders are quite common, and you have probably got one as part of your ISP's Software, or with you Web Browser.

Listname: WECAN
Title: WECAN, the Worldwide Electronic CFIDS/M.E. Action Network.
Subscription Address: membership@wecantogether.org
Web Page: http://www.wecantogether.org/

Our snailmail address is P.O. Box 805, Hockessin, DE 19707-0805; our telephone number is 302-239-6176. We "meet" by way of a private internet discussion list called WECAN, hosted by the commercial list-hosting site, best.com. Please read your welcome email and visit WECAN's web page for more information about how WECAN works.

When you join WECAN, you will be automatically subscribed to the list. It is a closed list -- only members can receive or send messages. It is NOT posted on USENET. The list is "pre-moderated" -- that is, a moderator will glance at the postings before they go out, to screen for flames, off-topic messages, repetitious messages, and spams.

We also have a second discussion list, called WECAN-Chat, that is used for support, friendship, humor, and general information, by the members of WECAN. Approximately half of the WECAN membership belongs to this second list. It is not formally moderated.

If you want to join, send us an email to membership@wecantogether.org. We'll send you a registration form to fill out, and you can join when you send it back.

Listname: CFS-Severe
Title: CFS-Severe - For those with severe/long-term CFS/FMS/MCS/etc.
Subscription Address: cfs-severe-request@tertius.net.au
Web Page: http://www.tertius.net.au/mailman/listinfo/cfs-severe

CFS-Severe aims to create a place where people with severe CFS, Fibromyalgia, MCS, and related diseases can communicate and get support.

It's a place where people who are severely ill don't have to worry about "scaring" the newly-diagnosed with horror stories, and can feel like their issues are understood. It is -not- envisaged that educating list members about treatment options will be a large topic of discussion. Many of us have been sick for years and pretty much "know it all" on that score. There are also other places that treatments can be discussed, including CFS-L and OzME.

What's meant by "severe"? It's up to you, but here are some vague guidelines. You can't work or go to school more that a few hours a week, and that from home. You have been sick for 5 years or more. You need a walking stick, crutch, or wheelchair to get around. You are, or have been, substantially bedridden. You are on strong, possibly narcotic, painkillers.

You can subscribe to CFS-Severe from this Web Page: http://www.tertius.net.au/mailman/listinfo/cfs-severe

Or by sending the command...

Subscription Address: majordomo@queernet.org
Web Page: http://www.queernet.org/lists/cfs-glb.html

For the discussion of issues facing people in the Gay/Lesbian/Bisexual community who are afflicted with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. Those with Fibromyalgia, Multiple Chemical Sensitivities, and Gulf War Syndrome are also welcome. It is a closed, unmoderated forum created to offer a gay-friendly and supportive atmosphere for the sharing of information pertaining to the many unique concerns that specifically affect these individuals. This list will provide a place to share experiences, vent frustrations and fears, ask questions, lend and receive help from each other, and hopefully form friendships in the process. Most information relevant to the GLB community is appropriate for the list, but discussion is certainly not limited to this specifically. While the list is geared toward the GLB community, it is open to all who are interested.

The group is run by a PWC (person with CFS), but anyone is welcome to join us whether they are ill or not. Friends and family members of PWC are particularly welcome, as are people suffering from similar illnesses.
