Monk and Monkey along the Bagmati

Pashupatinath, Nepal

Saduh & Saru
or
Monk & Monkey

Like Shiva, in his guise as the powerful yogin master,
this ascetic sits motionless, not atop a Himalayan peak, but inside a shrine along the Bagmati River.

Take a hit on the chillum. Bam Shankar.
I am Shiva.  My mighty dreadlocks are the source of the Ganga (Ganges) River.

It is said that there is but a 2 or 3% genetic difference between man and our distant ancestor shown here, gazing back into the face of his distant child.

There is a statue in San Pietro Vincoli, a rather unassuming church in Rome, which was part of the grandest tomb that never was.  Michelangelo abandoned work on the monumental tomb to Pope Julius II leaving the four unfinished blocks of marble that line the approach to the masterpiece that is Michelangelo's David.  Frozen in marble in time, the four slaves are bursting into life, but will never succeed.  Two other slaves are in the Louvre.  The piece in this awkward church in Rome is a statue of Moses, the prophet who spoke with God.   The motionless man to the right bears an eerie resemblance to Michelangelo's Moses.   Perhaps he too has heard the voice of God.

Let the earth spin, I'm sitting still.

If anyone knows of the historical connection between the Rastafari of Jamaica and the Indian dreadlocked, ganga-smoking followers of Shiva  let me know.

Keep your culture, don't be afraid of the vulture.
Grow your dreadlocks, don't be afraid of the wolf pack.
Rastaman live up....Don't give up.
(The prophet Bob Marley)
