There is a statue in San Pietro Vincoli, a rather unassuming church in Rome, which was part of the grandest tomb that never was. Michelangelo abandoned work on the monumental tomb to Pope Julius II leaving the four unfinished blocks of marble that line the approach to the masterpiece that is Michelangelo's David. Frozen in marble in time, the four slaves are bursting into life, but will never succeed. Two other slaves are in the Louvre. The piece in this awkward church in Rome is a statue of Moses, the prophet who spoke with God. The motionless man to the right bears an eerie resemblance to Michelangelo's Moses. Perhaps he too has heard the voice of God. |
