Wayne County coach Rodney Woods started the following lineup: 6-4 Sr. Austin Shearer, 6-0 So. Dagan Shelton, 6-4 Sr. Gavin Dunagan, 6-0 Sr. Kyle Hopper, and 6-1 Sr. Ryan Hopper. Lexington Catholic coach Brandon Salsman countered with 6-5 Sr. Taylor Martin, 6-4 Sr. Scott Schuette, 6-4 Sr. Hunter Porter, 5-10 Jr. Bryan Woomer, and 6-0 Sr. Seth Beckham. Note: Former Lexington Catholic basketball coach Danny Haney was honored tonight as the basketball court was named in his honor. The gymnasium was packed tonight with his friends and former players.
Lexington Catholic defeated Wayne County tonight by a score of 64-56. The score was tied 30-30 at halftime as Lexington Catholic was hampered by early foul woes to Taylor Martin as he was limited to approximately five minutes in the first half. Martin scored 17 points in the second half to lead the Knights to victory over a very tough Wayne County squad.
Lexington Catholic shot 44.1% from the field including three of 17 from the three point line. The Knights connected on nine of 14 free throws, pulled down 24 rebounds, and scored 21 points off 24 Wayne County turnovers. Wayne County shot 42.9% from the field including four of 16 from beyond the arc. The Cardinals connected on 16 of 22 free throws, pulled down 38 rebounds, and scored eight points off seven Lexington Catholic turnovers.
Taylor Martin led Lexington Catholic with 23 points and five rebounds. Scott Schuette added 12 points and five steals. Seth Beckham chipped in with 10 points and six assists.
Gavin Dunagan led Wayne County with 22 points and 16 rebounds. Austin Shearer added 16 points.
