Walton-Verona vs. Owensboro Catholic (Girls)

Walton-Verona coach Mark Clinkenbeard started the following lineup: 5-9 Sr. Brooke Perry, 5-8 Jr. Emma Strunk, 5-11 Jr. Emma Gutman, 5-2 So. Haylee Neeley, and 5-6 Jr. Addisyn Michael.  Owensboro Catholic coach Michael Robertson countered with 6-0 Jr. Hannah McKay, 5-11 Sr. Madelyn Lyon, 6-2 Sr. Sarah Clemens, 5-8 Jr. Spencer Harvey, and 6-1 Sr. MacKenzie Keelin.

 

Walton-Verona raced out to a 12 point lead midway through the second quarter but Owensboro Catholic’s size and length finally prevailed in a 44-40 victory over the Lady Bearcats.  The score was tied three times and there were eight lead changes in the game.  Owensboro Catholic shot 40% from the field including three of seven from the three point line.  The Lady Aces connected on 13 of 21 free throws, pulled down 27 rebounds, and scored 16 points off 14 Walton-Verona turnovers.  Walton-Verona shot 40.5% from the field including five of 13 from beyond the arc.  The Lady Bearcats connected on five of seven free throws, pulled down 22 rebounds, and scored nine points off 12 Owensboro Catholic turnovers.

 

MacKenzie Keelin led a tall and talented Owensboro Catholic group with 11 points and four rebounds.  Hannah McKay added 10 points, eight rebounds, and three steals.  5-9 Jr. Isabella Henning came off the bench to score eight points including six of eight free throws and three steals.  Spencer Harvey recorded seven points and five rebounds.  Sarah Clemens and Madelyn Lyon each blocked two shots and Clemens pulled down six rebounds.

 

Haylee Neeley led Walton-Verona with 11 points, five rebounds, five assists, and only two turnovers despite constant defensive pressure.  Emma Strunk added 11 points including two three point baskets, five rebounds, and three steals.  Brooke Perry recorded eight points and six rebounds and Emma Gutman added six points, three rebounds, and three steals.
