Friday February 25th

 

Lexington Catholic (19-10)  vs.  Lafayette (17-13) (Girls) (Championship)

Lexington Catholic coach Chelsea Chowning started the following lineup: 6-0 Jr. Alex Botkin, 5-10 Jr. Emily Johns, 6-0 Jr. Elizabeth Walton, 5-7 Jr. Bonnie Rhule, and 5-8 So. Octavia Wilson.  Lafayette coach Allison Tate Denton countered with 5-9 Jr. Taylor Mynear, 5-7 Jr. Emily Justice, 6-2 Sr. Shomari Kendrick, 5-5 Jr. Sarah Martin, and 5-2 Sr. Jariana Gillespie.

Lexington Catholic led 14-9 at halftime and 24-17 in the final quarter but Lafayette rallied for a 30-28 victory.  Lafayette led 30-27 but Octavia Wilson was fouled on a three point attempt with 0.2 seconds remaining on the clock.  Wilson missed the first free throw, hit the second, and then intentionally missed the third but Lexington Catholic was unable to get the ball for a tip attempt at the buzzer.  5-6 Fr. Kenyale Demus hit a three point basket to give Lafayette a 26-25 lead.  Lexington Catholic recaptured the lead with two free throws by Octavia Wilson to give Lexington Catholic a 27-26 lead.  5-10 Fr. Sarah Cooley gave Lafayette the lead for good with a basket to make the score 28-27 with 1:50 on the clock.

Lafayette shot 28.9% from the field including two of 12 from the three point line.  The Lady Generals connected on six of 11 free throws, pulled down 30 rebounds, and scored 10 points off 18 Lexington Catholic turnovers.  Lexington Catholic shot 29% from the field including two of 12 from beyond the arc.  The Lady Knights connected on eight of 14 free throws, pulled down 25 rebounds, and scored five points off 14 Lafayette turnovers.

Sarah Cooley led Lafayette with nine points and four rebounds.  Jariana Gillespie added seven points, three rebounds, four assists, and three steals.  Shomari Kendrick recorded six points, nine rebounds, and six steals.

Octavia Wilson led Lexington Catholic with 15 points.  5-9 8th grader Rachel Blake added five points and three rebounds.

Tates Creek (22-4)  vs.  Lexington Catholic (23-6) (Boys) (Championship)

Tates Creek coach Wayne Breeden started the following lineup: 6-4 Sr. Marcellus Barksdale, 5-11 Sr. Kendale Mack, 6-2 Sr. Todd Bradley, 6-0 Jr. Darius Gibson, and 6-2 Sr. Ryan Fucci.  Lexington Catholic coach Brandon Salsman countered with 6-5 Sr. Taylor Martin, 6-4 Sr. Scott Schuette, 6-5 Jr. Craig Floyd, 5-10 Jr. Brian Woomer, and 6-0 Sr. Seth Beckham.

Tates Creek’s Ryan Fucci hit a free throw with 2.2 seconds on the clock to give the Commodores a 46-45 victory over Lexington Catholic in the latest installment of three classics that have been played by these teams this year.  Tates Creek led 42-35 in the final quarter but Scott Schuette hit a three point bomb to give LexCath a 45-45 tie with 12 seconds remaining on the clock.

Tates Creek shot 38.1% from the field including four of nine from the three point line.  The Commodores connected on 10 of 17 free throws, pulled down 30 rebounds, and scored seven points off 17 Lexington Catholic turnovers.  Lexington Catholic shot 34.7% from the field including five of 21 from beyond the arc.  The Knights connected on six of 13 free throws, pulled down 33 rebounds, and scored 10 points off 18 Tates Creek turnovers.

Ryan Fucci led Tates Creek with 26 points including four three point baskets and pulled down seven rebounds.  Marcellus Barksdale added nine points and seven rebounds.

Scott Schuette led Lexington Catholic with 15 points including three three point baskets.  Taylor Martin added 10 points and eight rebounds.  Brian Woomer also scored 10 points including two three point baskets.
