Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus (PS2) Review

By Bunnystyle

Platformer?  What Platformer?

Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus, that's what platformer.

Sly may be one of the most overlooked games of the season.  Boasting only an E rating and a cartoon raccoon as the title character, Sly is one of the best platformers of the year.

A group of five criminals, known as the Fiendish Five, have murdered Sly's father and stolen the Thievius Raccoonus, a family heirloom with the tricks of Sly's ancestors, each one a master thief.  Sly is forced to grow up in an orphanage, meeting a turtle and a hippo, and all three try to hunt down the members of the Fiendish Five and recover the Thievius Raccoonus.

Graphics:

The contrast of the cartoon characters against an expansive background works surprisingly well.  The game is flat out beautiful, but unfortunately there were one or two areas where the framerate dropped.

9.0

Sound:
The sound effects are good, and the music is nothing spectacular but manages to set the mood.

8.5

Game Play:

Extremely fun, but a little too easy sometimes.  Controls are easy to pick up.

9.0

Replay Value:

After beating the game, you may go back to collect all the clues and vaults for the new ending, but that's about it and the game is kind of short.  You may wanna rent this one.

7.0

Overall:

The game is fantastic, if a bit short.  You won't put it down till you beat it and you'll love every minute.
