ScummVM (PC) Review

www.ScummVM.org

ScummVM in an implementation of Lucas Arts Entertainment Company’s (LAEC) programming language, S.C.U.M.M. (Script Creation Utility for Maniac Mansion). S.C.U.M.M. has been used to create many of LAEC’s classic adventure games, such as Sam and Max, Day of the Tentacle, Indiana Jones, Loom, and many others. Many of these DOS based games do not fully function in newer Windows operating systems (98, 2000, XP). Also, these games do not support the use of newer sound cards. ScummVM makes playing these classics possible again.

How do I use it?

First of all, ScummVM does not come with any games. You must obtain a copy of them first. ScummVM allows the user to add games to its menu. Just select the game’s file and let the fun begin.

Does it work?

It sure does. You can play your favorite classic adventures in all of their glory. ScummVM still has quite a few bugs. Day of the Tentacle crashed on me once. Sam and Max seemed to work just fine. But don’t let these problems discourage you. With your input, the creators of ScummVM will continue to improve this software.

What games are compatible?

Sadly, not every LAEC adventure game works in ScummVM. Current compatible games include Day of the Tentacle, Sam and Max, Indiana Jones: The Fate of Atlantis, Zak McKracken and the Alien Mindbenders, Full Throttle, The Dig, Loom, and a few others. The complete compatibility list is available on their website.

Overall:

There’s no better way to get those classics back in action than ScummVM. It’s still somewhat bug-ridden, but it is improving with time. Best of all… it’s absolutely free!

8.5
