Defense

Spiders are very effective hunters, but some-
times they can become the hunted. Their enemies are numerous, and include birds, lizards, frogs, toads, centipedes and deadly hunting wasps. These wasps paralyze spiders by stinging them, and use the still living spider as food for their young. To out wit their enemies, spiders use a range of defenses. Many are camouflaged to blend in with their backgrounds, while some imitate things that are not normally eaten. Others hide away in burrows topped with trap doors, and hold their doors firmly shut if an enemy tries to break in. If this tactic fails and the door is forced open, the owner often retreats into a hidden chamber behind a further door. It remains there until the danger has passed. Despite these defenses, many spiders are killed. Their best resource in the struggle for survival, is that most species lay a large number of eggs, so although many die, some always manage to survive.
