Gaining Speed

Challenge yourself by setting a timer (or have a partner use a stopwatch). Try to perform as many kicks as possible in an allotted period of time. Start with 10 kicks in 30 seconds and build your speed until you can do 20 and 30 kicks in 30 seconds.

Adding Height

The best way to add height to your kicks is to improve your flexibility. The more flexible you are, the higher you can kick. Additional leg strength also improves the height of your kicks. There are quick ways to gain a little extra height while performing kicks.

1) Pivot on the ball of your foot. Some martial artist end up pivoting on their heels; others turn flat footed. By learning to balance on the ball of your supporting foot, you'll be able to reach higher and farther with your kicks.

2) Lift your supporting heel off the ground as you kick. This can add several inches to your kick.

3) For kicks that require a pivot, you can you can add height by leaning over the supporting foot.

These quick fixes should be used even after you've gained additional flexibility.
