Egyptian Mummies: (beliefs)

-Egyptian Beliefs-

The Egyptians put in lots of effort to preserving the lifelike appearance of dead bodies since they thought that the dead needed physcial bodies for the after life. They preserved bodies by drying them out with natron and then placed them in a protective covering. Early Egyptians wrapped the bodies in mats. Later on they were wrapped in cloth and the placed in stone coffins. There were different types of mummification. They style that was used depended on the wealth of your family.

Some of the earliest mummies were found in a city called Hierakonpolis and they date from about 3400 BC. The embalmers covered those bodies in linen and covered them with a substance that protected the body from moisture. Later on, the embalmers fully removed the internal organs from the body (lungs, liver, stomach, and intestines). The organs were then placed in containers called canopic jars.

People gave lots of things to mummification and funerals, especially rich families. The burials of wealthy men or women contained objects that they used during their life, plus things made for the tomb. The soul was guided to the realm of the dead, ruled by Osiris, by religious texts like the Book of the Dead. It contained charms designed to overcome dangers.

The Egyptians thought that the sould of dead people lived among the gods but did not completly leave the land of the living. One part of the soul, the ba, could leave the tomb so that it could get itself food that their family members, or priests brought in or to talk 2 their living realitives who frequently brought in letters for them.
