Impacts of IT

In the past, the cashiers in NTUC have to key in the price of the products one by one. Now, with advanced technologies, cashiers just need to scan the barcode of the items and in a split second, the input is made. In this way, people do not have to spend a longer time paying for their items and transactions can be made quickly and easily.

With Internet Technologies, NTUC can assess on the stocks they have in a database and know when to take in more orders or to manage the stock inventory (e.g. by clicking on the database to find out the number of inventories they have left). In this case, it will be less time consuming and cost can be reduced.

NTUC also allows shoppers to do online shopping. Instead of them having to go down to the physical stores in Singapore, shoppers can actually shop for the items that they want at home or anywhere else via the Internet. The workers at NTUC will then deliver the items down to the shoppers. This helps to save time and effort of the shoppers but this will lead to an increase in transportation cost incurred by NTUC.

In order to apply for the FairPrice personal membership, the shopper needs to be a member of either an NTUC-affiliated trade union or the NTUC General Branch. With Internet Technologies, there is no need to go down personally to any FairPrice stores to pick up the application form; he or she can just download the application form from NTUC Fairprice’s website.
