Introduction of NTUC FairPrice

In early seventies, Singapore was faced with the oil crisis and rising prices due to inflation. The Labor Movement worked closely with the Singapore government in order to find a solution to this problem.

Then, in 1973, the National Trades Union Congress launched a supermarket co-operative called NTUC Welcome in Toa Payoh.  Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew was there to officially declare the store opened to indicate of the strong support from the government.

Other unions such as the Singapore Industrial Labour Organisation (SILO) and Pioneer Industries Employees Union (PIEU) also set up co-operatives to run supermarkets to help curb profiteering.  These two unions, SILD and PIEU, later merged to form the Singapore Employees Co-operative (SEC) in the early eighties.

In May 1983, during the growing competition and the need to be more efficient in costs, NTUC Welcome and SEC merged; resulting in the enlarged co-operative known as NTUC Fairprice Co-operative Limited.

Our Thoughts and Feelings

We find that NTUC Fairprice Online Shopping System is doing rather well in Singapore. We recommend that the organization can improve on the online shopping experience by providing its WebPages in more languages (such as Mandarin, Malay and Indian). This is because the products that it offers appeal to housewives more than the other segments of Singaporeans. Moreover, there is a large portion of these housewives who are unable to understand English.
