Alternative Approaches to Address the Issues Identified

To have an updated system, it is without say that costs have to be incurred. So our group find that cost is very important in this context. An approach that NTUC FairPrice might take is to reduce the cost by moving the department in charge of updating to a lower wage cost country (such as India since it has the expertise). Another alternative approach is to replace the locals with IT talents from other countries since the salary for one local worker is enough to hire 3 foreign workers (e.g. India).

In regard to peoples’ uncertainties and insecurities about online shopping, an approach that NTUC Fairprice has taken is to provide a privacy policy, which serves to protect the confidentiality, integrity and availability of all customer data against errors, sabotage, fraud and breach of privacy. Thus, customers would feel secure when making transactions or providing personal particulars online.

Time taken in NTUC FairPrice’s delivery services can be shortened further. For example, it can have 5 delivery vans - each van designated to a specific area in Singapore. For example, Van A designated to deliver to the West side of Singapore. Once an online order is confirmed, the van will be informed of the orders and drive to the nearest NTUC physical stores to get the goods and deliver to the customer premises. With this, we believe that delivery time and petrol consumption can be cut since the van does not have to drive all around Singapore. This is a more systematic approach of delivering.
