Reviews are done by Pat Trainor. He writes a lot of them, last issue more than we could fit in. Well, look for some better orgainization soon, but for now I'm just going to put them all on one page.
TERMS:
Hardcore: Fast paced punk rock, typically more screamy vocal stylings, hardcore
is a very much a relative term.
Examples: DFL, DS-13, 7 Seconds, Minor Threat.
Thrash: Extremely fast, chaotic hardcore punk rock, screamish vocals, youll know
thrash when you hear it!
Examples: DS-13, Civil Disobedience, Spazz, Charles Bronson.
DC Hardcore, harDCore, Straight Edge Hardcore, Old School Hardcore: Hard to
explain but all are fairly similar, usually low production quality…listen to
Minor threat or Reagan Youth and you'll get it.
Examples: Minor Threat, 7 Seconds, Bad
Brains, Reagan Youth, Beastie Boys, Gorilla Biscuits, Black Flag, Brother
Inferior.
Powerviolence: The fastest hardcore, extremely fast quitar riffs and even faster
vocals pretty chaotic.
Examples: Charles Bronson, Spazz, Combat Wounded Veteran,
Reversal of Man.
Anarcho/Political Punk: Punk centered around politics and social issues and/or
anarchist philisophies.
Examples: Propagandhi, Brother Inferior, Fifteen, Choking
Victim (sometimes), Chumbawamba (that’s right), Oi Polloi, A//Political, Crass.
Crust-Metalish/Thrashy harcore/punk: Usually political lyrics, or metalish
lyrics.
Examples: Civil Disobedience, Dropdead, Choking Victim (sometimes!), Leftover
Crack, Toxic Narcotic.
Pop Punk: Doesn’t really need and explanation but poppy punk.
Examples: Propagandhi,
Green Day, Fifteen, Operation Cliff Clavin, I Farm.
Pogo Punk: Medium paced punk, normally with kinda bouncy bass lines that make you
want to jump up and down (pogo).
Examples: Blanks 77 and the Boucning Souls
(sometimes).
Ska/Punk, Ska and Punk: Huzzah.
Examples: Choking Victim, Suicide Machines, Operation
Ivy.
Peace Punk: One of my favorites. Political punk idealising pacifism or
non-violence, usually vegan or vegetarian ideals too.
Examples: Crass, Conflict,
Chumbawama, Discharge, Crucifix and the best band ever, A//Political.
Oi: Originally British streetpunk, I suppose a lot of streetpunkish/punk rock n’
roll can be considered oi today.
Examples: Cockney Rejects, Sham 69, The Buisness,
Blitz, The Anti-Heros and The Dropkick Murphys (I guess).
Punk Rock N’ Roll: Just what it says, punk/rock.
Examples: Social Distortion, Stiff
Little Fingers, MC5, Swingin’ Utters.
NY Hardcore: The older NYHC is very very different than the newer interpretaton
of what is NYHC. Old NY hardcore is very similar to DC hardcore, minus some of
the straightedgedness.
Examples of OLD NYHC. Gorilla Biscuits, Beastie Boys, Reagan
Youth.
Note: What is considered NYHC today can range from very
melodic (and boring) overproduced hardcore records to the almost metal-core
hardcore stuff; 90% of what is NYHC today is total crap.
Examples: H20, Sick of It
All.
