STORIES FOR A COLD WINTERS NIGHT

CLICK FOR MUSIC

TERMINI

Time : December 24th 2000 Location: Termini Bros pastry shop South 8th street South Philly

Our story is told to us by Lou Izzo; As I make my way over the bridge coming from Jersey into Philadelphia, the vast expanse of the twi-light sky came into view, unobscured by anything man made, the sun was slowly setting, leaving a beautiful trail of colors that painted this cold crisp December night.

I take the exit that will take me into "South Philly" , and this feeling of nostalgia takes over me, I am on auto pilot as I pass through the familiar canyon like streets with the red brick houses that line it on both sides. Even though I do not live here any more, "South Philly" will always be a part of me. I am the prodigal son who has returned, to be fed and welcomed back, and to drink in unmeasurably the memories and traditions once more, I am home!

I do not need a guide or directions, these streets are etched on my very soul, there in the distance is my destination, like a beacon against the night sky is the beautiful neon sign, it may spell out "TERMINI PASTRIES" to you, but to me it says, "MEMORIES","TRADITION".

Through these sparkling chrome and glass doors I re-enter my youth, I remember again being a little child holding the hands of my mother and grandmother as we made our way past the counters of cookies and pastries.

Ahh! I deeply inhale the aromas and my eyes drink in the sights, Almond Macaroons stuffed with shredded coconuts, crispy Stogliadelli so very delicate with a hint of orange flavor ,Quorsemali chewy and chocolatey and my favorite , Canolis, golden crisp fried dough shells filled with different flavored riccotto cheese.

This is one line I do not mind standing in as all my senses are on high alert taking in the sensuous smells and the melodious sounds of the patrons talking, laughing, enjoying themselves.

Before you know it my order is packed and filled, and as I approach the door, I turn and look around, and I think, I'll be back again. Its my Christmas tradition, just one of the things that makes life grand.
