NOTES: "Their return is one of supreme confidence -- devoid of middle-aged decay, a spectacle of ferocious spirit and sonic innovation. And at its heart is singer Ian McCulloch, wrapped in a fur-trimmed overcoat, his voice full of rasping self-confidence and hopeless emotion." -

"I couldn't wait for them to play 'Lips Like Sugar Kisses', when much to my chagrin the sound was horrid! The first verse was a series of chopped up words, static and feedback. You could tell he was PO'd …." --

NOTES: "The annual event, held on a 600-acre site north [actually, it is 95 miles east] of London, was plagued by the worst rainstorm in the area in 118 years, resulting in bad roads, muddy fields and a stage that literally sunk in the mud. Roughly 90,000 people braved the elements …." -
MTV News, July 2nd, 1997. There was also a notable dust-up between Ian McCulloch and the festival's promoter.

NOTES: "I recall when the Buns played Kilburn, Oct 17th '97. I was a little bemused (although I should have known better realising Mac's heart) to find, next to the merchandise stall, some Liverpool dockers flogging t-shirts in support of their cause (docks closures and the prospect of long-term unemployment etc). During the concert, Mac urged us to support the dockers by buying their stuff." -

Echo and the Bunnymen

NOTES: "After the show I waited across the street for about an hour, waiting for Ian. Finally I saw the trademark haircut come walking thru the theater doors. No one was around. I proceeded to walk across the street and called to Ian. He seemed startled a bit, but after I talked to him and told him how he changed my musical direction he was very nice. He gave me his autograph and I was thrilled." --

NOTES: "When I saw Echo and the Bunnymen in San Francisco in 1997, I was completely blown away by the new wave time warp. It was as though they had not been gone for a decade. It was the most impressive return of a band I had ever seen. The hauntingly shadowed stage of smoke, netting and dramatic lights all brought back the past. Ian, Will, and Les as colossal silhouettes jamming out very early classic Bunnymen songs from their Liverpool beginnings, like 'Crocodiles', 'Rescue' and 'Show of Strength' proved that the rebirth songs like 'Evergreen' and 'I'll Fly Tonight' promised more to come." - Danny Murphy,

I took as my starting point Steve Doughty's excellent and comprehensive Bunnymen Recordings site, and have filled in gaps using the Seven Seas Archive (which went back to January 1st, 1999 at the time I copied it all into text files), as well as the various other web pages and articles cited in my listings. This is still very much a work in progress. I have received a good deal of help from members of the Seven Seas and Bunnymen.com communities -- thank you all!
