NOTES: The Leigh Open Air Pop Festival was a joint project of the Zoo and Factory record labels. It took place halfway between Liverpool and Manchester, England. Bill Drummond writes about it in his book 45. "I remember watching Joy Division come on as it was getting dark and there were loads of fires dotted around because there weren't many people in the field. People had just gone off and got wood and stuff to burn to keep warm." - Will Sergeant,
interview, eFestivals, June 19th, 2005

September 9th, 1979
Echo and the Bunnymen
Leeds, England; Queen's Hall: Futurama
NOTES: "At the time, we were concerned about being eighth on the bill under soddin' Spizz Energy, but looking back that was a hell of a thing to attempt. Joy Division, us and OMD were really launched on the public at that gig." -- Ian McCulloch,
Uncut Magazine, March, 1999. Other bands at the first Futurama festival included PiL, Cabaret Voltaire, A Certain Ratio, and The Fall.

Winter, 1979/80
Echo and the Bunnymen
Brighton, England; Brighton Basement Club
NOTES: “I don't know the date but it was definitely before the September 1980 gig in Jenkinsons in Brighton …. I think it was probably towards the end of 1979 but maybe early 1980; it was definitely winter as I remember it being freezing waiting at the door. As we were walking down from the station, and were just up the road from the Basement a white van pulled up and a scouser leaned out the window and asked me and my mate ‘where's the Basement Club?’ -- we didn't realise until after it was too late to swap directions for two places on the guest list, that the lads in the van were the Bunnymen ….” – email to The Bunnymen Concert Log

NOTES: “Hampered by an especially high ceiling the crew, despite a Herculean effort, fail to construct the ‘Heart of Darkness’ camo tunnel, and settle instead for an ornithology theme with added foliage in the netting.” – Melody Maker, October 18th, 1980

I took as my starting point Steve Doughty's excellent and comprehensive Bunnymen Recordings site, and have filled in gaps using the Seven Seas Archive (which went back to January 1st, 1999 at the time I copied it all into text files), as well as the various other web pages and articles cited in my listings. This is still very much a work in progress. I have received a good deal of help from members of the Seven Seas and Bunnymen.com communities -- thank you all!
