  • Hey y'all,

Just to bring you up-to-speed on a some ELHS '65 activities. Our monthly dinners are well attended. The attendance varies from 15 - 25 classmates, spouses and/or significant others. In the colder months we stay in or close to ELO. As the temperature warms we venture away from ELO. Often our warm weather destinations include sight-seeing, shopping, wine and always great people. Please join us for any and all our dinners.

A few of us have been going on the ELHS '65 Roadtrips. The last trip was a return ride across Pennsylvania Route 30, stopping at the Flight 93 site, and spending two days in Gettysburg. These trips are always great fun. Folks sometimes "carpool" while others caravan with us in the privacy of their own cars. Our June 2009 Roadtrip will be to the 12 mile stretch of the abandoned Pa. Turnpike. See the information in the Link column to the left of this page.

Our December holiday dinner will be at the Martin Family Center in ELO on December 13. We will meet at 6:00 PM, dinner will be served at 6:30 PM.

Stay safe - - hope to see you soon,

    John

  • Hey y'all,

Our May dinner/trip/sleepover to Ohio's Holmes County was GREAT!!! Fourteen brave souls met at Simply Smuckers near Orrville before venturing out to a couple of cheese factories, a GIANT flea market, a couple of wineries, a dinner of Austrian cuisine then finally a sleepover at winderful mitel in the heart of Berlin Ohio.

Check the left hand column for our upcoming dinner dates. They are a lot of fun!!!

    See you soon,

    John

  • John,

I still stand ready to join you in Reno. If I drive up, there would be room in my car for 1 couple (we could switch off, etc) to drive down the coast. Keep me updated. If nothing changes, we would join you. Jan and I just did the coast trip up to Monterey (and then up to Oakland for a wedding) last June, and it was great.

    Van

The trip Van is referring to is the ELHS 65 2009 Road Trip which may be viewed at the Road Trip website. Look under "Major" in the "2009" column.(js)

  • Twenty-six folks including classmates and some spouses met last night for our monthly dinner. The food was very good, but as always the company was wonderful. We had several hours of sharing family updates, retelling old stories, remembering classmates and friends who have passed on, and/or who we have not seen much these days. Most of all there was much laughter among good friends, old friends and new friends.

If you have the chance, please join us. In the two years we have been having these get-togethers and occasional road trips, each get-together has been better than the last!

Our March 15th get-together will be a slight departure from the norm. Having heard folks from home talk about a restaurant in Niles coupled with our next dinner date - the "Ides of March", and since we are in the midst of politicking which is reflective of Brutus & Caesar, it seemed a perfect opportunity to visit an Italian restaurant. Some of the "girls" from our class took this opportunity to remind me that there is an "awesome (??)" mall - just down the street.

Given how everything just seemed to fall together, those folks who are interested will meet at 3:00 PM at the Food Court. The girls will devise "gathering" opportunities, while the men guard the portals of the mall - - - and do what men do. We will meet at 5:45 PM at Alberinis Restaurant - - which is "just down the road". There is a map, menus, prices and more information at the Alberinis' web site. The following link will take you to the Eastwood Mall Web site. Once there, please locate the Food Court area next to Macy's. Mall map - - -   Mall Web site

Please mark your calendars for the April and May get-togethers. They too are a deviation from our "normal" get-togethers. Each also provides opportunities to combine, shopping, wine tasting, dinner and a sleep over.

    See you soon,

    John

  • I'm using the jimpurton@yahoo.com e-mail address all the time now. The old one still works, but it forwards everything to the yahoo address.

Thanks for all your work to keep us in touch.

Just returned from 8 week trip in the RV to Florida. It was a great trip this year, although we cut it shorter than normal so we could go to NYC for the great Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, which was fabulous. My favorite breed, the beagle, won, as you may have heard.

We rode the Amtrak train to NYC from Virginia - it's a great way to avoid the hassles of driving & paying the high parking fees in the city. Plus, you don't really need a car in New York, the subway is fantastic.

We're getting settled at home again & enjoying the early signs of spring - Robins in the yard, longer daylight & warmer temperatures. It won't be long till the leaves begin to show up on the trees.

Take care & keep up the good work.

  • From Terry Calhoun & John Stephens (Jan 2, 2008)
  • Terry Calhoon has created an ELHS site. He has invited all of us, as well as anyone who has ever attended ELHS to visit and join the site.

The address is http://elhsgrads.ning.com – Terry has offered me the opportunity to co-administer the site with him.

    According to Terry,

. . . this is new social networking functionality, think of it as a "Niche" Facebook or MySpace. I love it! It's a real step forward for user-generated sharing and connecting.  I have created some family sites with it, and also a couple of commercial sites, the most active of which is http://www.discgolfersR.us, which has nearly 1,200 users in less than 2 weeks.

It would let the folks you register for it (free) share wall posts, messages, photos, videos, blog posts, and a whole lot more. I think it would be a real boost to the ELHS alumni community. I have already created a group within it for '65 grads.

Registration takes about 5 minutes. I have already registered. The site holds real potential to allow each of us to post items, blog, talk on line.

Please take a look at the site. If you have the time let’s all register and give it a test drive.

Many thanks to Terry for including us.

    See you soon,

    John

  • Hi John

Looks like a fun trip ('08 Road Trips). I don't know if Kathy and I will make that one but we are retiring June 27th. We have great hopes of joining you on some of your trips. As soon as we can sell our house we will be moving to Hot Springs, Arkansas so we won't be too far away. 116 more working days but whose counting.....

  • We have been gone most of the summer with little trips here and there and now we're be home for awhile. Lynne (Goodman) goes back to school Wednesday. She works for food service in the Westerville schools. Only until Dec. 31st and then she will retire then. I been retired now almost five years. So that means next year we will probably be on the road a whole lot more. Lot of place we want to see and things to do.

    Thanks again.

    John,

We are still living in Colorado, Denver suburbs. Two kids, only one married and no grandkids. I took early retirement and am busier than I was when I was working.

A couple weeks ago, we were in the Virginia tidewater area, and visited with Charlie Jones from our class, and his wife Cathy (Stanley), class of '67. Charlie and I grew up together on Ogden Street. Cathy took a picture, I think they were going to email it to you.

Thanks for all you do in keeping everyone connected!

  • Great people, lots of rain, weenie roast & potato salad (May 29, 2007)

  • Hey y’all,

Hope your Memorial Day went well. No matter our position on war, we must always honor and support those who, no matter the reason, put their lives on the line for each of us.

This past Saturday some of us got together for a weenie roast at our campsite at the Lock 30 Campground. We had a great time sharing stories of grandkids, kids, the “ole” days, and immediate futures. One of the best parts was the when were all driven indoors by a torrential down (sideways) storm. It was like we were all 10 years old packed in to a “club house” - - - of course folks from the “other” gender were with us. That would have never happened then, but it was great!!! We will schedule another one soon.

Our July 14th dinner will be held at Beaver Creek State Park . It is a scheduled as a BYOE Family Picnic + something to share. Start time is 2:00 PM. I will get there early to find the best suitable place for us. Any and all family members are welcome - -see you then.

As you know there is ELHS ‘65 Roadtrip departing on June 24 ( https://www.angelfire.com/wv/joyrde/gettysburg/gettysburgroadtrip.html ). I will be making final reservations in the next day or two. If you would like to join us, please let me know right away.

I have been thinking of a 2008 Roadtrip. In a nutshell, we are having such a great time on our monthly winery trips that I am thinking of a late-June 2008 Roadtrip which would take us from winery to winery. I am thinking 200 - 250 miles a day. Stay at lodgings close to a local winery, where we will eat dinner each evening. Here’s first look ( http://www.wineweb.com/map_NY.html ). Given the price of gas - - and I have noticed a couple of us have either a van, SUV or larger vehicle, I thought we could car/van pool.

  • Great people, old cars, awesome wine and a wonderful time (May 19, 2007)

  • Hey y’all,

Yesterday, Saturday May 19, was another GREAT time with the traveling ELHS 65 dinner folks. Many of us explored the Hartville area - - flea markets, old hardware stores, candy stores - - - some of us even saw a “Caber Toss”, guys in kilts, girls ,dancing a “jig” and listened bagpipe music. Be sure and ask Butch what his favorite activity was :)

We met at the winery at 5:00 PM where we recounted a lot of great stories of the day, had some really good sandwiches and some awesome wine. My personal favorite was the Redneck Red!!!

Our next get-together is on June 16th at the Mastropietro Winery in Berlin Center at 4:30. For the menu, wine selections, map and directions, please visit - Mastropietro Winery .

If you have not joined us please consider doing so. These get togethers are very laid back, mellow friendly and most of all there is a loving/nurturing atmosphere which seems to have emerged.

I will be asking for conformations later in the month.

On July 14th we will have a family picnic at Beaver Creek State Park (Beaver Creek) I will try to get there early to “stake out” an area close to the attractions and creek. This picnic is open to all of your parents, kids, grand kids, etc. it is also a BYOE (everything) and something to share. I would assume that alcoholic beverages are not permitted????

Our August 18th get-together is a picnic at Geneva-on-the-Lake. Given the distance we will meet at 2:00 PM at the park on the north side of town (specifics to follow). This event was well attended last year and was a really GREAT time. Since this winery is 90 miles from my house, Eileen and I will be staying over (same as last year). Marianne took us to a great family restaurant for breakfast!!! We are going to try to get reservations at - - King Arthur’s Court. Take a few minutes to visit this link Geneva-on-the-Lake info .

GREAT NEWS ?!?!?!? - there is a flea market and craft show that day!!!

    There are 6 wineries with 30 – 40 minutes of Geneva-on-the Lake.

    Hope to see you soon,

    John

    . . . .Wolfman Jack and a Prom (GREAT IDEA!!! ) (May 13, 2007)

  • Hey John,

Have not heard from ya for a while. How are ya. All is well here.

. . . . I thought about something. For the next reunion, why don't we have a prom (or a sock hop??? js). I could put together so many songs from that era and even take requests and get them off napster if they are available. I could record the dedication ahead of the songs that the class asks for and we

I was listening to Wolfie yestrday and he played Sandy by Ronnie and the Daytonas. They sound a whole lot like the Beach Boys and this was a favorite song so I got it off Napster subscription. Then I listened to a bunch of others and ran across Those Teenage Years. This would be a great song to put on the website. It brought tears to my eyes and memories of the dances at the Memorial Auditorium.

    Enjoy

  • Sprague defeats Woomer for EL City Auditor (May 4, 2007)

  • By REBEKAH POTTER (rpotter@reviewonline.com)

EAST LIVERPOOL — In yesterday’s Democratic primary, challenger Terry Sprague defeated incumbent Kim Woomer (Bob's wife) 319 to 295, a margin of only 24 votes, according to unofficial results.

Sprague said she plans to make changes in how the city’s auditing is done by doing more than merely accounting. “I think that when the accounting is taken care of and in place there’ll be time to do other things to benefit the city,” she said.

When asked what she would like to see changed about the auditor’s office, she said, “It’s hard for me to answer that, because I’m not on the inside looking out, I’m on the outside looking in,” but added, “I’d like to see a spirit of cooperation.”

Sprague wished to thank Delores Satow, Leah and Marilyn Bosco, Ron Simmons, Paula Davenport, and Cliff Taylor for helping her and contributing to her success. “It’s nice to know that people believe in you that strongly,” she said.

Kim Woomer said she was “very disappointed.” She commented on the election results, “Well, I guess the voters just spoke ... they have an unexperienced auditor rather than and experienced auditor, but I wish her the best of luck,” she said.

  • From John "Beulah" Stephens (April 22, 2007)

  • Hey y’all,

As many of you know, our ELHS 65 page has not been updated much over the past 3 years. Good news (???) – the time has come for the position I held at school to be turned over to the next Teacher Leader. I will be going back to the classroom full-time (American & World History)

I should be able to spend more time on our website - - so please send me your news, digital pictures, etc.

If you are on my class e-mailing you know of the monthly get-togethers we have been having. The most recent was yesterday near Roscoe Village. We visited a couple of wineries, had a great lunch and an awesome dinner!!!

Our next scheduled get-together should be simply amaizing!!! Please join us at the Maize Winery in Hartville, Ohio. To checkout the details, please click on “ELHS 65 Dinner Dates '06-'07” in the link column on the left of this page. If you think you may join us, please let me know so I can give the winery a guesstimation head count.

There was a conversation this past weekend about visiting Amish Country (Holmes County) as a group sometime in the coming months. Watch for information about this ELHS 65 happening. If this interests you, please send me some dates, which work for you.

These monthly get-togethers are very loosely structured and informal. Although there is a core group of folks who can attend most of the dates, we always have classmates join us as time and other commitments permits. Please consider joining us. They are truly GREAT times!!!

    See you soon,

    John

  • From Charlie Jones (February 4, 2007)

  • Good morning John,

Sorry it's taken me so long to get back to you.

I don't have an ELO address. My brother Bill still lives in ELO. I'm sure you know him. He's a big supporter of the Elks. Cathy (Stanley) '67 and I were married in 1967 and have lived away from ELO since. I retired from the US Navy as a Chief Storekeeper in 1987.

Cathy followed me for 20 years and now I follow her as she's transferred. Cathy is presently the manager of the Fort Eustis Post Exchange in Newport News, Virginia. She works for the Army & Air Force Exchange System. Last year Cathy spent 7 months in Iraq as General Manager of the Bagdad area exchanges. She had 7 exchanges she flew around too in a Black Hawk helicopter. Cathy said caring for the troops there was the highlight of her career. Really proud of her volunteering to go. I work for Oceaneering International, a government contractor, at Naval Weapons Station Yorktown. We have two sons; both RN's.

We just moved Cathy's father from Chester to live with us in August. Cathy's mother died 15 years ago today and her stepmother passed away in March of '06. Ralph was having a difficult time by himself. I think the hardest part for him is adjusting to a new area and making new friends. He really misses his friends from ELO/Chester. Anyway, Cathy and I are planning to retire in 2009 and move back to ELO area then.

Let me know how you've been John. Hope to see you soon.

  • (I asked her what she has been up to and that I knew enough German to order beer and ice cream. js)

Well, I'm retired from the state of Ohio.

I work two part time jobs.   One, I work for a psychologist doing IQ and memory testing and the second I am an intermittent(fill in for sick and vacation time) at the Ohio Department of Health.

My son is stationed in Germany, when they don't have him in Iraq.  So, I have been to Germany a couple of times recently.  I can get coffee and cake also.  I can manage the train system without too many mistakes.  Fortunately, they mostly speak English so getting around is pretty easy.  I can tell some of what I am getting on menus--I might know I am getting potatoes or apples--it's just a surprise as to how they are done.

The international language of pointing works well, also.

  • Thanks for the e-mail and the pictures. I really like looking at them and I share them with people in my office who seem to "LOVE" the images the pictures represent. You have a picture that is titled "elopanarama1", I've made that my desktop background.

Your newest picture of 1st Church of the Naz in the back was...ahhhhh, the memories. I grew up in that church!

Your pictures make me long for a visit. I'm trying to talk my children out of our Mecca to Disney World next year and instead, I've promised them 2 16 hour car rides, Cedar Point and Thompson Park!!! Needless to say, they're hard to convince. Now, from what I understand Sea World and that other amusement park that shared the lake are not there any more?.... Or have they changed names?? Is it still a Sea World? I might be able to convince the kids to give in if it means more than 1 amusement park in a week! There's always Kings Island if it's still there.

I've checked out the website for Mountaineer Park (or whatever it's called now), and it's amazing to see how different it looks with the added facilities!

(In response to me asking "How's things"?). . . . Things have been great, but busy. Manuel and I started a new business with a friend from Nashville........the justmemusic, you can check out the website at www.justmemusic.com

I changed email addresses and sort of fell off of everyone's list. I had not accessed the website in over a year. It was great to get back on there. I really wanted to make the reunion, but the timing was bad. What's on for next year, the big 40?

We are looking at a buy-out for the new company and if that goes through we will probably stop working....at least for awhile. Anyway, we will have more time to travel other than business related.

You look great! (sweet talker!!) Have you lost weight? Hope the new position is good for you and that your health, and family are all good.

  • John -

(Following is Mary’s response to our last e-mail - - Sounds as though she is & has been having a GREAT time!!!) What have I been doing all these years ? Well, I was employed at a government defense plant in Florida for many, many years and when they closed they retired those of us that had enough years in to retire. That was nearly 15 years ago, and fortunately my husband who was project engineer at the plant was also retiring.

So we decided to travel and we traveled all over this country and several foreign countries. We have lived in Idaho, Nevada, Alaska, California, Montana, Oregon Coast (beautiful), & several other states, also the Bahamas, United Kingdom, Europe, Canada, and a few other places. When we traveled we didn't just go for a few days to visit the area, but stayed for awhile and made friends and got to know the area.

My husband took me to Amsterdam and Paris for the sole purpose of viewing Van Gogh's paintings because he knew Van Gogh is the artist of that period that I most admire. So I have been around and at this time am getting ready to move again.

  • As usual it's all in the memories.
Thank you so much for the pictures.

Our trip was rather at the moment. Really had no idea it would happen till we were in the car and checking into the Mountaineer. Had my husband Jeff Hall on his fist trip ever to East Liverpool. I wasn't with the class much. I wanted to show him a good time. Make certain he ate the donuts. Saw the brick streets. Went into all the rowdy bars. Saw a couple horse races. Meet some of my friends and old neighbors. How we were able to accomplish all that in three days was very much working it. Even went to St. Al's Sunday and just had a wonderful time.

Missed the parade but did have room service and champagne that morning. Regrets!

I like the picture you showed of me. Perhaps my best asset. I love to have fun and the weekend was a blast. What no pictures of my partner in crime Tom Leon and what about our other host Sue Leon (lost in the meltdown [js]). Glad I wasn't the photographer. Kill the messenger.

Thanks for the memories. You're the coolest. (swet-talker)

  • As you know, I normally either do not post personal e-mails or I edit the personal parts out. I am breaking my rule to post the following from Barbara Brown - Bob Ash's sister-in-law. As you know Bob has been battling leukemia for many years. Although in remission, just before the reunion the leukemia returned "with a vengence".

Bob's has only two choices, one _______ & two, go to Houston for experemential treatment. He chose the later. Barb has been keeping me current - - here is the latest Bob-update.

  • John,

  • Bob is still in Houston in the experimental drug trial. He did respond amazingly well, so well it almost killed him! There is a possibility that he will be able to come home in a few weeks and have his blood tests done here twice a week. He will have to return to Houston once a month, at the very least. He is in remission currently and we still pray for a complete cure.

The drug company and the doctor did allow as how his immediate response was so dramatic that it couldn't have been the medicine alone- no medicine is that good. That leaves divine intervention!!!

For the moment he is living in an apartment and will be on his own after next Saturday when Marge returns to go to school. Keep those cards and letters comin'.

Thank you so much for the pictures of class of '65. I grew up in East Liverpool till I was 16. I then moved to California with my family. These pictures was a wonderful walk down memory lane for me. I still have family there and I am going to try to come back sometime this year. I haven't been back since I was 18. One of my dear friends was Sherry Lapham and I was pleased to see her picture. Do you have any pictures of or know anything about Lewis Morris (Lewie), Joe Mercer, David or Delores Atkins, Fred Lightfoot, Gary Densmore, or John Bickerton.

Thank you again for the wonderful pictures!

  • Dear John,

I didn't get my shirt!! I was going to walk back up to the Oasis on Friday evening about 10:00 but thought it would be a worthless endeavor.......fooled me.

It was great to see so many people I hadn't seen for so many years. . . . . .

Late in the game I made reservations for the class dinner and was really looking forward to seeing so many "familiar strangers" after all these years. Don had taken his parents to Indiana (they were here from Florida) for a few days and didn't get into Boardman until about 6:30. By the time we returned the party was over. I was really looking forward to making contact again.

Thanks for the web postings, the pics, and news about our class . . . .

    Thanks again,

It sounds like your trip out west was a lot of fun. When will we see some pics from that trip?

  • From Sandra Rowley (via Fred Lightfoot)(August 4, 2004)

  • Dear Fred,

I don’t know if you remember me but we went to school together in East Liverpool until I moved to California in 1962. My name then was Sandra Rowley and I lived on Densmore Ave. I was on searching “google” and happened upon the East Liverpool High School alumni list and your name popped out at me.

I know it is really hard to believe we are all in our 50’s now and many of us are grandparents. I have two daughters, but I am not a grandma yet. I hope life has been good to you and your family. Do you have any children and are you a grandfather yet?

I am trying to find Lewie Morris, I am sure you remember him. If you know anything or anyone who might know of his whereabouts please let me know. Lewie always had a special place in my heart and lately I have been thinking about him. I know about what happened to his wife and children and then I lost all contact with him. If you can get in touch with him please feel free to give him my E-mail address (crosmihart@hotmail.com). I would really love to hear from him, you and anyone else that I grew up with back in Ohio. Just a little bit of history on me. I was married at 18 and had 2 daughters. I was married for 29 years before we divorced and have been single now for almost 10 years. Please answer if you get the chance I would love to hear from you!

  • From Kathy Jones (April 4, 2003)

  •   Hi John:

If you guys get any inspirational war related things or funny stuff to cheer he troops I could use it.  As you know I am retired and it is driving me nutz that I can do anything.  Not working directly in the media anymore since I am running my radio network, ONAirPeople.com and my new booking agency, www.arizonaentertainers.com.  But I got this wacky idea last week.

Here's the story.  I got a email about a pilot on the USS Constellation and attached was a letter he had written about his guys (he is the commander of the pilots) they have adopted a name of one who died in the 9/11 disaster. They have put a name on their F-18's.  It was inspirational so I wrote and thanked the guy.  He responded and I have been corresponding.  Long story short.  I sent him a 30 sec. audio file with a tongue in cheek weather

    (from your web-guy)
The audio file was huge!!!! so I did not include it. But if there is anything you can do to help Kathy, or support the troops in any way, please do so!!! This may be an editorial, but. . . . let's not leave them them out in the cold. . . like what happened with our generation.

An interesting side note: I have several former students in harm's way . . . one of them is an Ordinance Man on the Constellation. (John)

This seems unbelievable, but I sold my '52 Chrysler Saratoga on eBay to a man who lives in Sweden! One day soon it will be leaving here and heading to Sweden on a ship. I never dreamed there were foreigners collecting American cars. This makes his 4th '52 Saratoga. He already has a station wagon, convertible and 2-door coupe. My 4-door sedan completes his collection. In addition to the Saratogas he has a '52 Chrysler Windsor.

[elhs 66] is his wife of 36+ years. If my math is correct, that's grandchild #6!!!!

    John,
. . . . I'm thinking about driving to see my brother and maybe a get together on the following Saturday (11/23) at the Oasis. . . . . . I'm driving from California alone in my van to bring back some small furniture items to Tina and Tamara from Jan's mom's house. Jan is coming as soon as she gets off from school for Thanksgiving. She is going to stay with Tamara for an extra week to help her with the new baby (due 11/28, it's a boy). I'll let you know the final plans later.

I just got home from a baseball game. Oh, I forgot to mention, it was the WORLD SERIES!!! My wonderful daughter (Teresa) decided to treat me to my first (Angels-Giants) World Series( game 6). I told her I didn't want her to tell me how much the tickets cost. Wasn't that special of her to think of "dear ole dad". I guess if you raise them right, they'll surprise you by turning out "OK". . . . . she wanted me to go with her to keep her safe. (Yeah, right). Anyway, it was an awesome experience I'll never forget. In case you didn't see it, the Angels came back from a 5-0 deficit, to score 6 runs in the 7th and 8th innings and win the game. What excitement in that stadium. I thanked Teresa several times for "making me go". So much for my "highlight". Aren't kids great?

    =====================================================
I am an MTR newsgroup reader who stumbled upon your ELHS Class of 65 web page. I was born and raised in Youngstown, and was in the first grade in 1965.

My mother and father were raised in Rogers. Ohio, and my Uncle Don Cunningham was a graduate of ELHS.

I was a road geek at even that age and my favorite road was Route 7. Particularly the section between North Lima andELO. ( To me, Route 7 still goes through Cannons Mills and winds up in town on Dresden Ave.) If I recall correctly, the year you graduated was when the freeway was built from Route 170 south into town.

Your page brought back memories. The Isalys logo on the Klondike wrapper. We drove on the new freeway before it officially opened . Uncle Don and my Pop took me to a football game at Patterson Field and Old Route 7 (You guys might call it Old Route 30) was backed up all the way to Calcutta. It was my first high school football game. Ten years later I returned to Patterson Field as a stat man for my team, Youngstown Chaney. We beat you guys in what is probably the best high school football game I ever watched. 14-7.

Nights that I couldn't sleep would find me and my pop making the drive to Liverpool (he worked nights) and we would park at the City Hospital and walk across the Newell Bridge to West Virginia, and then go have breakfast at the Golden Star Dairy.

I have a lot of fond memories of ELO. I have lived in Fla. for most of the last 20 years.

Thanks, Brother Buckeye. Long live Lou Holtz.

    Regards, Benny

  • Hi John.

I wanted to tell you about the American Cancer Society Relay For Life (for more info "click) that Kathy and I participated in last month. I'm sure some have heard of them since they are all over the country, but for those who don't know it is a 24 hour walk to raise money for cancer research. You form a team and get people to sponsor you. We put together a team in memory of Kim.

We had about 30 members on our team and one person from the team is on the track walking or running at all times for 24 hours. We pitched tents and camped out and had a marvelous experience. It started off at 9am on Saturday morning with a ceremony for all the survivors and the first lap is walked by survivors only. Kathy is a 5 year survivor and walked for our team.

There was food and entertainment all day and at 9 PM they had a Luminaria ceremony. They lined the track with bags that candles in them and the names of survivors and those who lost the battle written on the bag. It was a very moving experience. Then at 9 AM on Sunday a bagpiper led everyone around the track for a final lap. It was awesome.

Our team raised over $10,000 and the whole event raised $115,000. We were so impressed with the whole event we asked how we could help for next year and they appointed me chairman.

It's a great experience and I know they have them in the East Liverpool area because Bob Ash has participated. For anyone whose family has been touched by cancer (and that's most of us)it's a great way to help raise money to find the cure. Do it. You'll be so glad you did.

    Dear Family and Friends,

I am at my brother's for a short visit while driving another sister to a family wedding. Things are moving along for me. Today, after I get back to Canton, I will be turning in my letter of application for the Novitiate. Sr. Shawna the Novice Mistress, will go over it with me to make sure it is ok and then deliver it to the sisters during their weekly meeting on Tuesday. At that point they will schedule a special meeting called a chapter to decide weather I take this next step, extend my postulancy, or leave. To say I am a bit nervous is an understatement. I will know their decision in about three weeks. I hope that all of you will pray for me. There isn't a lot of new news though we do have a new postulant from Texas. Actually she was born in Ohio but moved to Texas years ago. She, like many others has been married and has several children. Her children are all grown and are very supportive of her decision. A small complecation in her name, Kathleen. She is called Kathy, our Kathy is called Kate, and I am still Kathleen. She has a PhD in Education and was teaching reading to freshmen. She is just a month younger than I making her the oldest entrant at our monastery.

If they accept me into the novitiate, I will have some restirctions on communications and visits. Not that it will be much of a change from what is happening now but it will be a set of official rules that I will have to follow. I may make only two phone calls a month for normal reasons. Emergencies, business, health, etc are exceptions. I may write only two letters a month with the same exceptions. I may receive only one visit every two months same exceptions. People may write to me but I may be a bit slow in replying. The Abbess suggested that I write to my niece have her load it on email, and forward it to everyone. I will only have 30 days permitted ourside of the monastery for any reason. If I go over the time, I would have to make it up delaying the official start of the second novitiate year. It would be a minimum of 2 years before I would be able to get back on the net but even then with the same restrictions. The idea behind all of this besides observing our rule of enclosure, is to help us focus on our reason for being here; If you got a calendar, you have seen the schedule and know that we are in prayer or related activiities most of the day. We have two hours for work, one hour for class or study, and one hour of private time. The rest of the day is scheduled.

The sisters, the whole order is worried and praying for our houses in Pacistan. One of our sisters, Sr. Anna, spent 34 years there. She went there at age 19, before WWII through the conflict for independance. If the conflict there escalates to more than border scirmishes they may have to evacuate. As Christian women in a non christian country they have very few palces to go. I know other orders are also worring and praying for their houses in the contested area.

I won't recieve any email responces unless my niece prints and mails them to me. I keep all of you in my prayers.

Blessings, Ann ( I hope to be Sr. Raphael of the Visitation soon ) I will let family know the outcome in about three to four weeks and ask that all of you be notified.

    John,

I actually got to talk to Patty yesterday and things are looking hopeful. They moved her from intensive care to a step down unit, and that's encouraging. She had a lot of broken bones, some internal injuries, and lost a good bit of blood. They have operated on her twice now, and hopefully the worst is over. There's infection is the bones in the left leg, but the long hard rehab is probably going to be the toughest part now.

She is thankful to everyone for their prayers and good wishes. It looks like the worst is over, but please keep the prayers coming. She's going to need them for the long way back.

    Thanks again,

    Dear John and Classmates,

Just wanted to let you know that our class raised a little over six hundred dollars for the Avon Breast Cancer 3-day. The donations were a little slow at first, but as people got on the web site more and more came in.

Thanks to everyone who contributed. I completed the 60 mile walk on Sunday. It was a great experience. The first 40 miles were pretty easy. We walked about 7 hrs a day and camped out at night. 5 miles into the last twenty, I had a problem with my left foot and it was quite painful. With a few motrin along the way, I finished the last 15 miles with pain that I could tolerate. A friend of ours who is a sports medicine doctor, met me at the ER last night, because the pain got pretty bad when it was all over. I think that I was running on determination the last 15. I have a stress fracture in the top of my foot and am now in a boot cast. It was still worth it and was for such a worthy cause as well as for Sondra. I will do it again next year and Sondra has committed to join me. She is doing great by the way and was so touched by the out-pouring of support from our classmates.

John, you do such a wonderful job in keeping everyone in touch and up to date on each others lives.

    Thanks again friends!

thanks for including us on the West Coast in your mileage chart! :-)

I think the idea was GREAT. I also think, since so many of our classmates are also good friends, that you guys should plan an "outing" at least every other month at a fun place now because..............before too long everyone will be too happy to just stay home on a Saturday night. Our "scream and shout" years are winding down so what better reason to still raise a little hell now!?

  • Hey John,

Here's the brief version so as not to put you to sleep. I didn't go to college right out of high school, but finally graduated with a BFA in Graphics Arts and minor in Business Management from Youngstown State University. Married and lived in Wellsville for a few years. Divorced, I moved to Naples, Florida 20 years ago with my son, Ian ? now 22 years old. I worked for a lifestyle magazine as a Creative Director and fourteen years ago started my own advertising/design studio creating ads, logos, brochures and CD's for musicians, packaging design and other fun stuff. About five years ago, I bought the oldest magazine in Naples...now 49 years old and publish it on a monthly basis in addition to my advertising/design company. I am getting ready to put a version online of the magazine. I will let you know, in case anyone wants to visit this area and know what to do. The magazine is arts and entertainment oriented about this area. I also take on special publishing projects.

There are quite a few people living in this area from East Liverpool, I found out when I received the alumni book. One group in particular has a get together in Fort Myers (nearby) once a year for ELHS Alumni.

Again, thanks your tireless devotion to this web communication/connection you are making with all of us!!!

Just wanted to say hello and let you know how much I love the Class of 1965's website. The classes of 1965 and 1966 were so intertwined and I have been able to make some connections with a lot of old friends. I had been looking for my cousin, Jane Abrams and was so glad to hear from her after all of these years. Maybe at some point the Class of 1966 will have a website as successful as yours.

Keep up the good work and look forward to seeing many of you in 2004.

  • John,

I just wanted to thank everyone for the e-mails and phone calls reagarding our grandson, Jack. The outpouring of support and prayers was a testimony to what growing up in a small town is all about. Shortly after I sent you that e-mail asking for prayers for Jack, his conditioned worsened and the arthritis had hit more of his body. He could not even feed himself because his little arms would not bend without a great deal of pain.

Now for the good news! Jack's arthritis turned out to be reactionary athritis and not juvenile arthritis. They don't know if it was a reaction to an upper respitory infection that he had in December or to the allergic reaction to a drug that he was given for that infection.

He responded well to medication for the arthritis. They just took him off to see if he was still symtematic and within a few days it was clear that he has no more symtoms and is running around like a typical two-year old.

Again, thank you for the opportunity to reach so many people.

Have missed your e-mails. I hope that your health is ok and that all is well with your family.

  • Hi ya'll

I went to Tampa this weekend to see Ohio State beat the University of South Carolina--even though a former alum was coach (we lost!!!). Imagine my surprise when in a pub in Ybor City I found a gentleman with an ELHS alumni sweatshirt on. He introduced me to several other ELHS alumni as well . . . . showing the true ELHS spirit. There was a New Year's Eve parade in Ybor City with floats that throw out beads similar to New Orleans except that you don't have to bare anything. Anyhow, I really wanted these beads--it probably had nothing to do with the Guiness and Harp that I was drinking--right!. So, this ELHS grad would come into the bar each time a float came by that was throwing out these beads. And, he even saw that I stood on a bench where I could better reach the thrown beads. My friends were sooo impressed about this ELHS spirit.

  • Hi John,

Imagine my surprise to see an E mail on my computer from you. The last time I saw you was after the 15 year reunion when you stopped by my house in Seville(Ohio). It's been a while!

We pulled the plug on Ohio in 1988 and headed for Arizona. Just got tired of the winters. Now if we want snow we drive up to Flagstaff for the day.

Our 2 Children, Jill and Ethan, are grown and living in California with their families. We all plan on getting together at Jill's home in San Diego for Christmas. We have 4 grandsons, 2 from Jill and 2 from Ethan. Their ages are 4, 3, 1, and 1. I'll send you a picture after Christmas.

The web page is terrific! I got a kick out of the 3rd grade Taft photo from Mrs. Saltzman's class. It's hard to believe we were ever that young. A lot of water has passed under the Newell bridge since then.

    I attached a picture of my wife Pam and I on New Year's eve Y2K. . . .

  • Hi John,

It was nice to hear from you. I live in Wellsville and am married to a 1964 ELHS graduate, Steve Mathess, and we have been married 31 years. We have no children, thus no grandchildren. I have been in education for 32 years -- teaching in the Beaver Local system. I taught 3 years in the high school and the remainder in the middle school. I retired May 31 of this year. I coached Varsity volleyball for 18 years and the last seven years I have coached in the middle school. My husband is also a teacher in the same system -- high school algebra and plane geometry. This is Steve's 33rd year and he would like to make it to 35, but each year is a new experience, so he may change his mind at the conclusion of this year.

I haven't attended a class reunion -- usually in Canada at that time of the year, but am going to try and make the next one. What has been going on with you?

Please keep in touch and will continue to keep in contact with you. Take care, Barb

  • I have already sent the following to those of you whose e-mail addresses I have. The reason for posting it here will become apparent at the end of the note.
    September 28, 2001
    Hey y'all,

Haven't heard from me lately. . have you??? missed it, haven't you????  and why have I been remiss???  Well on Saturday, September 22nd , while in Pittsburgh visiting our newest grandchild . . . and his parents. . . . . I had a heart-attack. Although I had been seeing a doctor who thought I was having acid-reflux, the heart attack, medically-speaking was a surprise!!!!

I spent the next 45 minutes having a serious one-on-one with God. As much as I like Pittsburgh, the bulk of my family, my doctor, my students', my wife's career are here in Ohio. . . as dumb as it sounds, it would have been really inconvenient to have a prolonged hospital stay that far from Ohio. If I were going to die I would have liked it to be in Ohio. . . . or at least W.Va.

I know I probably don't strike as religious person, but God and me are pretty tight. We have talked a lot over the years. He has tested me many times. . and I am sure he will many more. Bottom line, I felt we could make it home.

So we left Pittsburgh and I drove to the Ohio-line. . . then Eileen drove to Medina Hospital. Once their, they ran tests for EKG, etc., took blood. Although the nitroglycerine was not relieving the pain, everything was normal. . . until the blood work came back. . . the heart enzymes instead of the usual 80 - 100 were 1700. . . . Then the started pumping me full of morphine, Demerol. They did an "Echogram" and determined that the heart attack was caused by a blockage in left Anterior descending artery. . . . Now I have a cobalt-chromium stent in there.

So that's the short of it. Once again God has touched me. Once again I scared my family. How do I feel? It is a major effort to walk from the attached garage to the family room. Supposedly I am not "out of the woods". I am supposed to stay home from work for at least 4 weeks, but if I am feeling better. I will try to sweet talk the doctor in letting me go in earlier.

After I sent this to y'all the outpouring of support was truly incredible. You,  the products of the early "baby boom", who have seen and experienced so much. . .  whose roots and life's guidelines are East Liverpool. . . . you are the most wonderful people in the world.

Thank you for all of your words of encouragement, prayers . . . admonishments (deserved) and love.

    John

. . . . . We spent 2 weeks in East Liverpool, the middle of June. We found my Mother doing pretty good and enjoyed the time with family and friends. Mom turned 82 years old on the 19th of June and we had a party for her at the nursing home. She seemed so thrilled. She is at East Liverpool Convalescent Center # 1 on Armstrong Lane. We also celebated a 40th wedding anniversary with my husband's sister and her husband. We always enjoy our time there and it goes so fast. We did get to see some people we had not seen for awhile. East Liverpool will always be home.

Take care and thanks for all of the time you spend keeping us all updated on the happenings.

  • Hi John,

    Thanks for the e-mail.

A little update on what I have been doing. I have been living in Minnesota since 1970 except for four years when my husband and I lived in Germany. We moved there four days after our wedding. He was on assignment with the 3M Company, designing and testing copiers. Our son Brandon, who is 20, was born in Dusseldorf, four months before we returned to the States.

Brandon is a junior at the University of Minnesota - Duluth, majoring in computer science. He is shy like his mother and has a dry sense of humor. After spending the past five summers working as staff at the Boy Scout camp (He's an Eagle Scout.) in northwestern Wisconsin, he decided to stay in Duluth this summer, take a couple of courses and work on campus.

Our daughter Devon is 18 today. She will attend the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities (the campus is in Minneapolis) and plans to study chemical engineering and theater. We just attended her 12th dance recital this past week - tap and jazz. Her personality is just the opposite of mine - loves to perform in front of crowd and make friends in an instant.

David, my husband, still works for 3M (31 years) and does computer networking. He's very active in the Boy Scout program in St. Paul, serves on lots of committees and will attend the Jamboree in Virginia in July.

I used to be a pediatric nurse (last worked in that field in 1981). The past nine years I have been employed in a regional office of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). I do lots of things - serve as office manager, supervise support staff, organize meetings for a seven state area, staff a couple of committees, and take care of whatever else comes my way. I really like my job and the hours are so much better than nursing.

. . . . Thanks for asking what I've been doing the past 36 years.

    Hi John,

Wanted to thank you for the terrific website. It has been great fun! Also wanted to share with you that the Dallas Morning News is doing a story about Route 66. It ran yesterday and today. You can access it on DallasNews.com/Extra.

I saw that Patty was wondering about Sondra Bryan. Sondra and I stay in touch on a regular basis. She lives in Knoxville, Tn. We met last December in Nashville and spent a great day together. Sondra looks just the same.

I have been living in Dallas for 29 years. My husband and I have been married
for twenty years. I have two children, Lizzie , 29 and Josh, 27. Lizzie graduated from Tulane University and married her college sweetheart. They live in a Houston suburb and have two children, Jillian age 3 and Jack age 18 months. Lizzie is a professional fund raiser. My husband says she has been fund raising from him since she was eight years old!  Josh  graduated from the University of Texas and just married this past April. He lives here in Dallas. He sells airtime for a TV station in Dallas.

My husband, Manuel, owned an aircraft repair station at Love Field in Dallas for 22 years ( old air force guy, viet nam and all -enjoyed your e-mail on the military) He sold his business several years ago and is now in specialty retail. He has locations in Texas, Louisiana and Tennessee. We were in Nashville on business and Sondra drove in for the day. I have a small company called the Unique Greek. One of my reps operates the website (www.theuniquegreek.com). We do personalized items for fraternities and
    sororities.

We love being grandparents and do a good deal of traveling. The traveling centers around family and scuba diving, something that our entire bunch is into.

My parents retired to Dallas when my children were small and they have since both passed away. My dad, 13 years ago and my mom 3 years ago. The last time that I was in ELO was for the 15th reunion. Your website has made me homesick and I am definitely going to make it in 2004!

The time and energy that you put into bringing old friends together is remarkable!
I'll send some pictures soon via snail mail. I haven't mastered the scanning thing. I'll let Sondra know that Patty asked about her. If anyone wants to reach her they can contact me by e-mail. I've got her address and phone number.

    Take care,

  • . . . . . Our daughter (pictures) got married as planned on April 28. It was a wonderful day. The wedding was a Western theme, complete with boots, (I personally didn't wear cowboy boots, but our daughter wore red ones under her white gown!) hats, and a lot of denim and bandanas. The groom's dad is a judge and he co-officiated with the minister. Anyway, he wore his robe, but underneath was jeans, boots, an embroidered vest, and string tie.  Are we a fun group or what??!!

We still have all our tornado damage. I have my sewing room back even though the tarp still covers the skylight. I think every house in Florissant (Missouri) needs a new roof and guttering so, we just have to wait our turn.  It's also taking a while to get new windows and skylight cause they're all custom-sized and had to be special ordered.

    (I'll send) . . a pic (maybe two) from the wedding . . . . .

Linda and my sister Kay have remained good friends all this time. Linda, and her husband Larry have one grown daughter, Lisa Marie, who is a chemist.  There is one grandson. Linda and Larry live in Cleveland.

I'll tell my sister that Bill was asking about Linda and she'll let Linda know. Our old neighborhood was the best and I have such phenomenal memories of growing up and McKinley School. Tell Bill I said so and that I said hi. Hi to you too.

The local Police and Fire department unions joined forces and put on a Bike and Car show, which Dan Painter (ELHS '65) was the "man at the mike". The proceeds went to Toys for Tots and Shop with a Cop, I believe. Here are a few picture to show how the turn out was and also Keep up the good work on your class site. Have a good time on your trip but most of all be sure to return to us unharmed and safe.

  • . . . I have just gotten to my mail. I have been in the hospital for the past few weeks. I had to have an emergency back surgery. And then off to rehab to learn to walk again. While in the hospital my sons got together and finally got my PC back working once more. Aren't they sweet?

I had tons of mail to sort through but I wanted to answer yours asap. . . . . I have been living in Fla. for the past 15+ years with my boys. . . . . I still have family in ELO, so I make the trip every few years. . . . .thank you for getting in touch with me and I hope to hear from y'all again.

  • Hey, John,

I'm doing fine. Have landed the volunteer opportunity of a lifetime at the National Air & Space Museum's Garber Preservation & Restoration Facility in Suitland, MD. We're working on a P-38 Lightning right now, getting it ready for display in the new annex facility which will open in 2003 for the 100th anniversary of the Wright Brothers first flight.

I attended a seminar at the Garber facility back in '94 & the director told us if we were ever back in the DC area to stop in for an internship. So, when we moved here last fall, I took him up on his offer. It's like being in Mecca for an aviation buff like myself!

A few weeks ago we had a "roll out" ceremony for three of the planes which had been completed after about 12 years of restoration work. It was really something to see. The pride on the faces of the people who had done the work was just amazing. They're a great bunch of people & very dedicated to their work.

When I have more time I'll send you a photo or two of these historic planes.

Anyway, my wife & I are enjoying the DC area & will be exploring the East Coast as time permits.

Keep up the great work on the ELHS '65 web site, John.

  • Hi john.....

I guess it has been a while.......

Things have gone well for me these past 36 years. It doesn't seem like it could have been that long. I can still remember doing 3 man drills in the mud behind the stadium with Norm Six yelling at us when we were in junior high!

I left Ohio for California between my junior and senior year and graduated from Simi Valley High School in Southern California. I joined the Marine Corps in 1967 and survived a 13 month tour in Viet Nam. Shortly after getting out I got married to a great lady..(we are still married. 31 years!!!)

I went on to college and fulfilled a boyhood dream and graduated with a degree in Forestry and have worked as a forester in Alaska and California.

We have lived in Susanville, California the last 11 years and we will probably stay here for a few more years.....my wife is a first grade teacher and we have 2 boys ages 26 and 22.

The older one graduates from law school next year (U of Oregon) and the other one will graduate with a math degree next year (Humboldt State).

Hope life has been good to you. I have not kept current with many folks back there. It was good to hear from you. Drop me a note and let me know how these last 36 years have treated you.

    Jeff Withroe
