Historical German Shepherd Pedigrees 1900-1930

This is a collection of the earliest German Shepherd Dogs for which pedigrees are available. The breed was created by Max von Stephanitz, from primarily two types of sheepherding dogs.

Of the two varieties of sheepdogs that founded the German Shepherd Dog breed, the Swabian Sheepdog variety most closely resembles the German Shepherd Dog as we know it. Differences between the Swabian dogs and the German Shepherd are relatively minor.

The Thuringian Sheepdog variety also shows resemblance to the German Shepherd Dog. The Thuringian dog has a much finer muzzle in proportion to the backskull than the German Shepherd does. The Swabian dogs much more closely show the head type the German Shepherd inherited than the Thuringian dogs did.

Max von Stephanitz describes a number of German working varieties in detail in his book "The German Shepherd Dog in Word and Picture." There are also numerous pictures of early German Shepherds, and examples of other varieties that played a part in not only founding the German Shepherd, but several other present-day working breeds as well. For anyone who is interested in in-depth history of the beginnings of the breed, as well as much material on care, training, structure, and many other topics that even today, apply in various degrees.

In studying the history of the breed, it is amazing how far, and at the same time, how short a distance the breed has traveled in its evolution.
