A Letter To Peg

"Peg" left a very touching private message in my guest book.
After I replied to her, I reread the letter I had written. I realized this was something that should be said to the whole world.

Peg,

I was very touched by your entry in my guest book.

My heart goes out to you and your daughter. I know it can be so hard to protect our children. It is impossible to be with them every second of every day. What your daughter needs now, more than ever, is to know that you love her and she is not the guilty one. Be supportive and open to her. When she is ready, she will come to you. Encourage her to talk about it or to seek counseling. Don't try to force her. Remember, she was forced to do something terrible by someone she trusted and she will resist force of any kind.

You also have to learn to turn your misplaced feelings of guilt into a flower of hope. We can't change the past, we can only learn from it and allow ourselves to grow and become stonger.

What you term as a "sick, sick world" only exists because so many have been afraid to speak out for so long. Our silence has been their protection. That is the purpose for this and hundreds of other web sites, organizations, and help lines throughout the world. We are taking down the screen of silence and secrecy. We are telling the world that incest and child abuse exist and closer to home then most realize. Ignoring it will not make it go away. Keeping it a secret will not ease the pain, it will only protect the abusers.

It is up to us to stop incest and child abuse in this generation. It's time to break the thread. We must cut a hole in their "net of secrecy". We owe it to ourselves, our children and each generation to come. Children need to know when someone harms them that they have the right to tell. You were very fortunate that your daughter trusted you and could tell. A child's trust is very sacred, we should never abuse that trust.

Please keep me posted on how you and your daughter are doing. I will be thinking of you.

Have a blessed day,
Jeannie
