1. Independence
Principle -- Primary orientation to reality, not to other people.
Metaphysically Given Fact -- Reason is the faculty of the individual. Although one
person can tell another person what to do, the former cannot think for the latter. Each man
faces the world primarily by himself.
Intellectual Attribute -- Being an intellectual self-starter
Existential Attribute -- One must survive by his own efforts.
2. Honesty
Principle -- Rejection of unreality
Metaphysically Given Fact -- Reality exists, and nothing else does. There is no
competition to existence.
Intellectual Attribute -- Passionate cognitive devotion to reality. Knowing what you
mean, and meaning what you say.
Existential Attribute -- Don't try to gain values on a basis of unreality.
3. Integrity
Principle -- Loyalty to rational principles
Metaphysically Given Fact -- Man survives by means of mind AND body -- they must
be integrated; the body must do what the mind values.
Intellectual Attribute -- Forming of rational principles, and understanding of why they
are principles to begin with.
Existential Attribute -- Acting on rational principles.
4. Justice
Principle -- Rationality in the judgment of other men
Metaphysically Given Fact -- Man is a being of self-made soul. Man has free will.
Intellectual Attribute -- Judge people rationally and methodically. The more
important a person is in one's life, the most time and attention one must spend judging
him/her.
Existential Attribute -- Reward the good and punish the bad -- take actions that are
consistent with rational judgment. Make judgments known.
5. Productiveness
Principle -- Adjustment of nature to the needs of man
Metaphysically Given Fact -- Man's survival requires this adjustment. Man is not given
his values, so he must work to create them.
Intellectual Attribute -- Productiveness is essentially the intellectual attribute of all
values.
Existential Attribute -- (same as above)
*PURPOSE -- Having an orientation toward certain values. Man is not automatically
purposeful. Thus, the most important value that one must produce is PURPOSE.
*CENTRAL PURPOSE (Not to be confused with Highest Value) -- Ayn Rand would say: your
career. This is where a person starts off. It's man's primary method of existence, and also it is
necessary that one create values before he can share values. As Rand says, you cannnot say
"I love you" without first being able to say "I".
6. Pride (not to be confused with the *feeling* of pride)
Principle -- Moral ambitiousness
Metaphysically Given Fact -- Good character and virtue is not inherent.
Intellectual Attribute -- Taking morality in one's character seriously -- making morality
a purpose in one's life.
Existential Attribute -- Acting morally, and making virtue second nature.
*SELF ESTEEM -- A person's recognition that he/she is capable and deserving of life.
*PERFECTION -- Having an unbreached rationality. It is the most achievement that is possible
to a given person in his or her context--no imposition of a supernatural standard. It is possible
in Objectivism to attain perfection.
