THE ALLIES

Pink Floyd is incontrovertibly the best band in the world. Some may claim that this title belongs to Zeppelin, or the Hendrix Experience, or perhaps even The Beatles, and although I respect these differences in opinion, I KNOW, for a FACT, that the Floyd rules above all.
But instead of making this an uninformative shrine to the gods that comprised the Floyd, I will try to include some insights and facts.

The Band

RogerHave you ever wondered "which one's Pink"? Well, the answer is, "Roger". Roger Waters, in my very non-humble opinion, was the brains behind the band, and the member most responsible for keeping Pink Floyd going after Syd Barrett's psychosis. Many people think of Roger as a pretentious, overbearing, egotistical man, but I know that he is nothing less than an artistic genius. He left the band in the early eighties, and the other members kept the floydian name (after a painful lawsuit) and continued making albums(only two studio albums, to be exact). Roger Waters has had a semi-successful solo career, and has been more professionally active than his ex-bandmates. He toured earlier this year (In The Flesh, 2000) and I went to his concert. It was one of the most wonderful experiences in my life.
For the records, Roger was the bassist, lyricist, and one of the vocalists for the band, and wrote the vast majority of the music.

DaveThis is David Gilmour, the guitarist of the band. He is often referred to as the "soul" of the band (with Roger as its "brain"), but I do think that is going a bit too far. He is an excellent guitarist--maybe not as technically good as Hendrix or Page, but his style is soaring, moving and original. He joined the band in 1968 to replace the schizophrenic Syd Barrett, and has been with the band ever since. Dave is also a lead vocalist, and wrote some of the music in Pink Floyd's prime; now, without Roger, he writes almost all of it.

RickRichard (Rick) Wright, the keyboardist of the band, was trained in classical music, and has a good ear for tunes. He doesn't, however, have a very strong voice, nor notable music-writing talents, so he didn't sing many Pink Floyd songs (the only one I can think of right now is "Remember a Day"), and he definitely didn't write too much of the music. Roger obviously didn't find him very useful; he "fired" him from the band during the making of The Wall. He officially rejoined the band in the mid-nineties for the production of The Division Bell.

NickNick Mason, the percussionist/drummer, was the only member to be a constant part of Pink Floyd since its formation in the mid-sixties. He wrote very little of the music itself, but he is a good drummer, although not as dynamic as, say, Bonham or Neal Peart. Of the three post-Barrett Floyd members, Nick was the closest to Roger Waters. It is said that Nick Mason is more involved with aviation and sports-car racing than he is with music. This is probably true.

SydSyd Barrett was the original Golden Boy who fronted the Floyd. He was a charismatic and artistically talented young man with a dangerous fondness for LSD and the late-sixties English drug scene. His creativeness drove the Floyd for a few years, and his psychedelically whimsical singles made the top ten. The drugs and fame took a toll on Syd, and he was horribly schizophrenic by mid-1968, so loony that he couldn't even tour anymore. So he was replaced with Gilmour, and he went down into rock music legend forever. Pink Floyd's album Wish You Were Here was largely inspired by Syd, the "crazy diamond", a casualty of the rock-'n'-roll lifestyle.

The Albums

Album Cover Year Released My rating Comments
Obscured by Clouds 1971 5/10 Not bad for a soundtrack...highlight tracks include "Childhood's End" and "Free Four".
Meddle 1971 7 It has three outstanding tracks, but is brought down by so-so songs like "Pillow of Winds" and "San Tropez" (although I do like the latter), and "Seamus", the Floyd's worst song. "Echoes" is one of the band's greatest songs, and contains their best guitar solo.
Dark Side of the Moon 1973 9 Years and years ahead of its time, this is the classic Floyd masterpiece. The only reason why I didn't give it 10/10 is because it's far too overplayed and overhyped. "Time" is by far the best track on the album.
Wish You Were Here 1975 10 Along with The Wall, this is the greatest album of all time. All tracks are wonderful; "Wish You Were Here" has been my favorite song since the seventh grade.
Animals 1977 9.5 Roger Waters created this album with incredible venom and cynicism, and although many people find it too "dark," I find it moving and visionary. The highlight tracks are "Dogs" and "Pigs: Three Different Ones".
The Wall 1979 10 For those who don't already know (shame on you), The Wall is a concept album chronicling the descent into alienated madness of a fictional rock star, "Pink Floyd". This album is pure greatnss. "Hey You" is my favorite song from the album, but The Wall is meant to be listened to from beginning to end, so I caution against skipping tracks.
The Final Cut 1984 8 Roger wrote The Final Cut alone, and he sings every song, save "Not Now John", which is sung partially by Dave Gilmour. The album is much more developed conceptually and lyrically than it is musically, and is one of the best in those respects. This was (ironically) the final album to be produced before Roger left the band.
The Division Bell 1994 8 Despite my conviction that the post-Waters Floyd isn't really Pink Floyd, and despite my distaste for Momentary Lapse, I think that this is, musically, a very good album, although it's lacking conceptually. Incredible mood music.
Amused to Death 1991 9 This is Roger's best solo album. It is very powerful lyrically, and musically, it is very good. My favorite song is the title track, although they are all excellent.

Pink Floyd is the greatest band in the world, but I listen to other music, too. Some of my favorite non-Floyd artists are Radiohead, Led Zeppelin, Tool, Jethro Tull, Rush, Peter Gabriel, The Scorpions, Enya (surprisingly), Neil Young, and the Doors (otherwise known as: "Jim").
