There was no Sedan de Ville until 1956.

The Cadillac emblem's origins is in a family name in relation to a "coat of arms" symbol.

The Couronne or Crown symbolizes the six ancient counts of France. Each tip is topped with a pearl which is suppose to indicate they descended from the royal counts of Tolouse. The content of the shield indicates the origins of a noble family. Its shape is similar to shield shapes used during the Crusades but older Cadillac shields were round.

In the shield are arms de la Mothe, the birds are merlettes, martin type birds. You see three of them like the Holy Trinity. Merlettes were usually given by the school of heralds to knights as a reward or award for their help during the Crusades war. The color black and gold show wisdom and riches. The "fess" or lateral black bar indicates the badge for Crusader service.

The red band is for prowess and boldness in action. The silver for purity, charity, virtue, and plenty. The blue for knightly valor. This emblem can be found in various parts of the auto, the hood ornament, stamped or embroidered in the interior, the rear trunk and wheel covers.

Cadillac differentials are very unique in the sense that the ring gears are riveted to the carrier. This is NOT a serviceable part. There is one gentleman in CA who will rebuild these units, his starting price is $1,200 plus parts. To do this he must machine out all of the rivets on your old rear end and the unit for parts, this is very time consuming and expensive. According to Hollanders 1958-62 Cadillacs except CC and Series 75 use the same unit. The axle ratio is 3.36:1 which is the preferred ratio for all around driving.

Top Causes of Accidents

Automobile accidents caused by distracted drivers in urban areas tended to be the result of drivers looking at other crashes, traffic, or vehicles or cell phone use.
Rubbernecking was responsible for the largest number of accidents reported (16%) followed by driver fatigue (12%), looking at scenery or landmarks (10%), passenger or child distractions (9%), adjusting the radio, tape, or CD player (7%), and cell phone use (5%).
Beware of Storm Damaged Cars....
Consumer advocates warn that a flood-damaged car can be resold without a buyer knowing its waterlogged history.

"We'd advise people to be careful," said Brad Benfield, spokesman for the state Department of Licensing. Flood damage can ruin electronics, contaminate lubricants and threaten mechanical systems. Airbag controllers or braking systems may also corrode over time.

Still, it's not illegal to sell a car that has flood damage. Such problems should be disclosed to buyers, Benfield said, and car dealers are required by law to disclose what they know about a car's history. But private sellers are not.

Cars that are declared total losses are often resold at salvage auctions. If the cars are reregistered with the state, the title is branded "rebuilt" but nothing on the title says it has been flooded.

So there's no easy way for consumers to find out whether a vehicle in this state was totaled because of flood damage.

Because state motor vehicle laws differ, cars that are wrecked or flooded in one state could be registered in another state while hiding the history.

Some insurers voluntarily report the vehicle identification number of flood-damaged vehicles to Carfax and AutoCheck, commercial databases that let consumers track a vehicle's history. However, most insurers don't.

HOW TO SPOT A FLOOD-DAMAGED CAR
  1. Have a reputable mechanic inspect the vehicle.
  2. Be extremely careful when buying a "rebuilt" car; some consumer advocates say avoid them altogether.
  3. Look under carpets to see if the floor is wet, damp or muddy.
  4. Check the seat-mounting screws to see if there is any evidence of rust or that they were removed to dry the carpets.
  5. Inspect lights; a water line may show on the lens or the reflector.
  6. Look for mud and debris in difficult-to-clean places, such as the gaps between panels in the trunk and under the hood, and on the bottom edges of brackets or panels where it couldn't naturally settle.
  7. Check the rubber drain plugs under the car and on the bottoms of doors. If they look as if they have been removed recently, it might have been done to drain floodwater.
This is really great information, barrowed from the Seattle Post Intelligencer, only slightly slimed down.
