Icy Blue Spey
Oregon fly tyer Monte Smith designed and tied "Icy Blue Spey". It is the first in a series of Spey flies from Monte that will be presented here. This Spey was so fascinating to me, I asked Monte what his inspiration was. His answer: "The Icy Blue was inspired by a couple of things: 1) I believe the color 'blue' is underutilized, particularly in steelhead flies. It is a proven color for me in both my trout and steelhead flies. 2) I'm inspired by Icelandic and Scandinavian flies. Poul Jorgensen's Blue Rat comes to mind. I tied a similar pattern called 'Norseman' in a full dress Atlantic style awhile back, with not much more than display purpose in mind. I thought about adapting it to a Spey fly, this time one that would fish. And it does. The blue hook adds a little class to the dressing for display, I think. Certainly not necessary for a fishing fly." You can see more of Monte's flies at The Flies of Monte Smith.
