Step 12

Trim the butts of the deer hair

1.Tie in the font hackle.

2. I used 6 black-dyed rigneck pheasant rump hackles. Fold the hackles back as you wrap them around the hook.

Note: Ed Ward's pattern calls for orange rigneck pheasant tail. I like the pheasant rump because it is pretty well-behaved and easy to work with. The ringneck pheasant tail should be soaked in water and split down the stem with a straight-edge razor to get it to behave as a hackle.
