Alpha History SSS and Alpha Chapter History

The 1890's witnessed a Women's Movement that resulted in the distinct possibility of higher education for females.  The Normal School, organized in Farmville, Virginia and later called Farmville Female College, attracted many young Virginia women.  It had high academic standards and was nearby Hampden-Sydney, an all male college.

Not surprisingly, the women at the Farmville Normal became well aquatinted with the nearby Hampden-Sydney men.  Although dating was very strict between the two schools, many women were inspired by their Greek-letter friends at Hampden-Sydney.  Eight young women in particular, who epitomized the spirit of the New Women, formed the S.S.S. Club with the desire "to be linked in closer bonds of sisterhood." Looking for life long-friendships, leadership opportunities, and involvement in campus activities, on April 20, 1898, with encouragement from their fraternity friends, the eight women established their own Greek-letter society to be known from then on as Sigma Sigma Sigma.
