Butch Davis
started his Browns career the same way that he has since starting coaching. With
enthusiasm, intelligence, and a win. The Browns beat the Green Bay Packers by a
final score of 10-3. But this game was about more than a win. Butch Davis got to
look at his team play as a team in Cleveland Browns Stadium. Things looked to me
moving smoothly with the first string team. On the Browns third possession Tim
Couch and Jamel White marched the Browns 96 yards for the score and that ended
up being the difference of the game. Jamel White started the game for the Browns
and had 29 rushing yards and 22 receiving yards. He and Tim Couch connected on a
9-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter.
For the first time Tim Couch looked comfortable in the pocket and made some good
passes. Hitting Kevin Johnson and Quincy Morgan on slant patterns that were the
most effective passing route of the night. But James
Jackson had a great night as well. He had 10 carries for 66 yards. He showed
why he was confident that he would be the starter on this team. He showed his
ability to run up the middle and the break away speed when he broke a 33-yard
run. Travis Prentice continued to disappoint this preseason and Ben Gay got in
at the end of the game and showed enthusiasm but was unable to do much more. He
should see more time next weekend against the Tampa Bay Bucs.
Former
Kent State star, OJ Santiago seemed to play well with the second team. He keyed
several blocks and showed his value to Coach Davis. Things did start to get
sloppy and the Browns piled on penalties in the third quarter but still managed
a field goal. Ty Detmer started with the second string offense and didn’t do
too badly. He went 7-12 with 107 yards passing and one interception. All in all
this seemed to be a good start, to what hopes to be a great season. Feel free to
email any comments on the Browns game… We hope to post some in the next few
days. Drop a line in the forum and vote on the Browns Poll.
