THE BEACHES OF THE ISLAND OF SIFNOS IN THE CYCLADES IN GREECE

The biggest attraction of the island of Sifnos is a row with pretty beaches in the south of the island, of which Vathi in its own mini bay is the best. There is also a taverna here. You can get to Vathi by bus over the new road, or you can get there by kaik from Kamares. There is also a path that leads to the coastal village of Platis Gialos, with its taverna's, rooms for rent and some smaller hotels. This is the "main beach" of Sifnos. A little bit more to the east is the popular village of Faros with its three small beaches. Some of the beaches can be reached over an asfaltroad, other beaches over a track and some of the beaches can only be reached by boat. Below are four beaches that we visited and that we have made some pictures of, but of course there are more, such as the beach Vroulidia in the north of the island, not far from the village of Heronissos. It is reached by a path from the main road. It appears that you can get there by car, but we saw the road and it is not too good, so we have not tried to get there.

We thought Faros was a cozy and quite a nice village to see. It is situated in the southeast of the island of Sifnos and accissible over a good road. There are some tavernas and there is some accommodation. Mid-May most of the amenities were already open (the mini market, tavernas), unlike in Platis Gialos, where everything is still closed. So a good choice for the early birds who seek peace, but like to eat out in the evenings. Faros has three beaches. Faros Beach itself is the beach with tavernas and the harbor, where traditional wooden boats are floating around, Glipho lies just next to it and is accessible via a path in the village. Here are trees where you can lie down if you seek shade. On the other side of the village you finf Fasoulou beach, which is accessible from a junction just before you drive into the village. Again, trees for shade. This is probably the quietest of the three beaches. As of 22/25 May a taverna on Fasoulou opens its doors. You look out on the Chrissopigi Monastery.

The beach of Platis Gialos on Sifnos

Well, this must be the largest beach of the island. Platis Gialos Beach is located in the south of the island. Admittedly the pictures I have put down here are made on a day when there was a lot of wind (according to other websites there never is any wind because it is in a protected bay). We noticed that at around May 20th, when we were inthe village, it was shut down completely. All taverns and accommodations looked like they were like closed and there was nothing to do. It understood the village is only open from June. Platis Gialos supposedly is one of the largest beaches in the Cyclades, but on other Cycladic islands (Santorini, Milos, Mykonos) I have seen much larger and wider beaches, so the description on the internet is perhaps here and there a bit exaggerated. I estimate that the beach is about a kilometer long and it is not very wide. On a hill just above the village you can see the Panagia Vounou monastery, and near Platis Gialos you can find one of 57 Hellenistic towers (the socalled "White Tower") that the island Sifnos has.

The beach of Heronissos on Sifnos

Heronissos Beach is located in a beautiful bay in the far north of the island of Sifnos. We were here around May 20th as well and it was very quiet. I think everything (the tavernas and the mini market) was still closed. It is an idyllic village to see and the beach is sandy, but not very big. There are trees on the beach in case you want some shade. In the bay are the colored wooden boats and it looks like a real Greek fishing village.

The beach of Kamares on Sifnos

Kamares beach is located in the west of the island next to the harbor where all ferries arrive that visit the island of Sifnos. It's actually quite an attractive and large / wide sandy beach, where the sea is gently sloping (therefore suitable for small children). There are some stretches of beach with beachchairs and umbrellas for rent and of course all other facilities (taverns, accommodations, shops) are nearby. There are also many trees around the beach where you can lie down in the shade.
