Step 5: Create Your Pages

I believe that it is easier to create a look for your pages, then plug in your information. Once you create the look, you can use one page as a template and copy and paste your information into it.

There are several aspects you need to consider when you are designing your pages. The ones that will be covered here are:

bullet Navigation
bullet Legibility
bullet Simplicity of Design

Of course, vitally important is navigation. There are many different systems used by web designers for navigating through sites. The ones that we will use here are navigation bars. You might, for instance have a bar across the top of your page that lists the most important pages in your site and you might have a bar down one side of your page that lists other pages in your site. You might even have bars down both sides and the bottom of your page that list and link to other pages in your web site. I encourage you to browse through various sites noting the type of navigational system that is used. The example that I have you create uses navigation bars.

Legibility is very important for your pages. If your writing is too small to easily read or if the words run off the page and the viewer has to scroll back and forth to read them, your viewer will not stay to view very long. The font you choose should be easy for the viewer to read also. Fancy fonts may dress up the page, but if the font is difficult to read then it defeats your purpose.

Finally, the layout of the page and the elements in it should enhance, not distract from, the content. Keep the layout simple. Don't use a lot of animations, they distract the viewer. Make sure your background is simple enough that your font can be read on it. Patterned backgrounds often make the content difficult to read.

Find graphics to use on your pages. You may purchase web graphics collections or try searching for free graphics on the Internet. There are lots of sites offering free use of graphics. Make sure you give credit to the source. What text or graphics will you use as links? What color scheme will you use?
