Purpose

The purpose of this workshop is to take you step by step through the process of creating your own class web site. By the time you complete the workshop, you will have a site up and running and be fairly familiar with how to go about updating and modifying it.

If you are doing this workshop solo rather than in a seminar or classroom setting, you should use the checksheet, following the directions in order, step by step.

Objectives:

You will:

bullet Determine an audience for your site
bullet Specify the communication intended for the site.
bullet Demonstrate a knowledge of the technology needed to create basic web pages.
bullet Create a basic class site.
bullet Compare and critique your own site and those of other teachers.

Outline of Workshop

I.    Introduction and Overview

  1. Go over syllabus and outline of workshop
  2. Analyze your purpose for creating a teacher or class web site.
  1. Viewing various teacher web sites. Here I include the web addresses or web pages of various teacher sites that are very good. I might also include the addresses of sites where student grades can be confidentially posted, etc.
  2. Decide on and write out a stated purpose of your site or reach agreement as a group on a stated purpose of your teacher sites.

II.    Create a visual map of your teacher/class site.

  1. Teachers list out what they want to achieve with their individual sites.
    Gather materials needed to post on site.
  2. Teachers use poster board and post it notes to create a visual outline of sites and how they would be linked together.

II.    Creating a simple web page in Netscape Composer

  1. Creating the text for the site.
  1. Entering and formatting text.
  2. Using tables.
  1. Putting images on your site.
  1. Clip art
  2. Scanning images
  3. Digital images
  1. Formatting, color, extras.

IV.    Uploading your site to the web.

  1. Uploading individual files
  2. Publishing
  3. Testing your site.
