The saga begins with the crew (Gohan, Bulma, and Krillin) getting in Kame's old spaceship and head off towards Namek for an expedition for the dragon balls on Namek. Goku will not be with them because he is too injured. The crew first landed on a fake Namek, until they reach the real Namek. When they first arrived, they notice that Vegeta has come too to look for the Dragon balls. After Goku eats a Senzu bean he is healed. He decides to travel to Namek to aid the crew. Vegeta clashes with Frieza's forces time and time again. Eventually they meet some of the Nameks and head to see Guru, the elder Namek, who opens up their hidden power. During the hunt for the dragon balls, Vegeta battles and kills Zarbon, Dodoria, and Cooey which are three of Frieza's strongest henchman. Vegeta steals the dragon balls from Frieza and is only missing one, the one Gohan has. Frieza then calls the Ginyu Force to eliminate the all of them. After the Ginyu arrive Vegeta decides to join forces with Krillin, and Gohan to stop this evil force.
First, Captain Ginyu brings all the dragon balls to Frieza while the rest of the Ginyu Force prepares to battle Vegeta, Gohan, and Krillin. First Guldo takes on Gohan and Krillin. At first it seems that Gohan may win, but soon the tables turn and it looks like they could be done for. Since they are still important to him, Vegeta kills Guldo. Next Recoome steps into the fight beating up all of them. It seems they are going to die when all of a sudden Goku arrives.
Goku arrives much stronger since he trained 100 times normal gravity. He easily defeats Recoome with one blow, than Burter and Jeice step up to battle. Goku starts toying with them until he defeats Burter. After his defeat Jeice runs away to contact Captain Ginyu. Vegeta then finishes off Burter and Recoome. He explains to Goku how ruthless and evil Freiza's henchmen are. Soon Captain Ginyu realizes that his friends are now dead. This enrages Captain Ginyu so he flies off to fight Goku. Gohan and Krillin fly off to get the Dragon Balls, while Goku and Vegeta are left to fight with Captain Ginyu and Jeice. Vegeta then leaves so Goku must now face the remaining Ginyu Force. Captain Ginyu fights with Goku, but they seem be evenly strong, until Ginyu realizes that Goku wasn't using his full power. Then he asks Goku to show his full power. Captain Ginyu is now afraid because he realizes that Goku is much stronger than him. Captain Ginyu then wounds himself very badly. Captain Ginyu has done this because he had a special technique. It was the ability to switch bodies. Captain Ginyu then switch bodies with Goku. Goku is now left alone, and with no knowledge on how to use the new body. Ginyu then finds Gohan and Krillin, and tries to eliminate them. Gohan and Krillin badly beat him because Captain Ginyu is not used to Goku's body. As time passes, Captain Ginyu learns how to use Goku's body and begins fighting back. Then Vegeta shows up and kills Jeice. Then Vegeta targets Captain Ginyu and beats the heck out of him. Now Captain Ginyu wants to switch with Vegeta's body. Ginyu is about to switch with Vegeta when Goku gets in the way so that Captain Ginyu is back in his old body. Sensing their is one more chance left, Captain Ginyu tries again, but this time Goku throws a frog in the beam. Now he is in the body of a frog. Since Goku is injured badly, they decide to go to Frieza's spaceship to heal and prepare for Frieza's arrival.
Gohan and Krillin wait for Vegeta to fall asleep first. Krillin goes to find Dende to find out the password to the Dragon balls. Eventually the two meet up and return back to Frieza's ship. Dende is now ready to make their wish with the dragon balls. They bring Piccolo back to life, and then another wish to transport him to Namek to help fight Frieza. Before they can make a third wish Vegeta wakes up and he is extremely angry. But before Vegeta can get his wish for immortality granted, Guru dies and the dragon balls turn into stone. Then all of sudden Frieza arrives and he is extremely pissed off.
Vegeta and the other guys have begun to fight with Frieza. Meanwhile Piccolo fuses with Nail and is now in the battle. Frieza transforms into his second form and spears Krillin. Dende however heals Krillin before he dies. Gohan steps up to fight Frieza and gets beaten up, but Dende heals him too. Piccolo puts up a pretty good fight with Frieza until Frieza goes into his third form. Now Piccolo can barely handle the stronger Frieza. By the time Frieza reaches his fourth form Piccolo is outmatched. But before Frieza goes to his fourth form, Vegeta talks Krillin into beating the heck out of him and then getting Dende to heal him so he becomes more powerful. Then Frieza realizes that Dende can heal, so he kills him. When Vegeta tries to take on Frieza, he can't even lay a hand on him. Frieza seems to be unstoppable.
Goku shows up right as Frieza kills Vegeta. It seems that this battle is going to be pretty even. But Frieza proves superior to Goku. Even after hitting him with a Spirit Bomb attack Frieza still keeps on fighting back. As Frieza kills Krillin, Goku goes into an angry rage on how the evil power killed his best friend. Goku starts slowly transforming into a high powered Super Sayian, a blonde hair and green eyed warrior. The fight's outcome seems that Frieza will be defeated. To ensure a victory he blasts Namek's core, setting the planet to explode in minutes. Goku though discovers that Frieza can live anywhere, and that he doesn't need air. Since Goku wants to know Frieza's true power he lets Frieza charge up to his one-hundred percent. Goku and Frieza fight for a long time until Frieza sees that he can make a wish because just before Mr. Popo wished everyone killed by Frieza back to life including Guru (Creator of the dragon balls). Dende makes the wish to the Great Dragon that everyone on Namek be transported to Earth except Goku and Frieza. Frieza is pissed off realizing that he was not granted immortality because he didn't speak the native language. Goku and Frieza continues their battle until Frieza makes a mistake and ends up getting sliced by his own attack. Since he is pure of heart, Goku gives Frieza a small amount of energy so he can survive the blast of the planet's explosion. But Frieza who is pure evil tries to use the attack against Goku. The might warrior blocks the attack, and sends a blast back at Frieza, killing him.
Back on Earth they use the dragon balls to wish everyone back to life which includes Tien, Chatzou, and Yamcha. Goku refuses to come back to Earth because he is not dead and he is training with his new power. The Nameks now return to the New Namek, and everything on Earth returns to normal and peaceful.
