Previous Ships called Iliad

First USS Iliad

Ship Designation USS Iliad NCC1869
Class Miranda Class
Captain Gossett
Dates in Service 2266 to 2291

The first ship to bear the name USS Iliad was commissioned by Starfleet Command in 2257. This was the year when Captain Christopher Pike set out on the second of his five year missions as Captain of the USS Enterprise.

Miranda Class StarshipThe ship was built at the San Francisco Fleet Yards on Earth and was launched on Stardate 1529.1 (2266). The Miranda class starships were exploration vehicles, also used for science missions. The basic design was for a ship that was very adaptable, hence their popularity. The ship class has served Starfleet for over a hundred years.

During her time on active duty, USS Iliad NCC 1869 (which itself served primarily as a survey ship) helped evacuate inhabitants of Argolis IV following an outbreak of Bersallis Fever in 2271 and later, in 2274 was the first ship to transport colonists to settle planet Artimus III. Her finest hour however was also her last, USS Iliad was destroyed in 2291 with all hands whilst attempting to evacuate a station orbiting Torellis IV during the battle of the same name. This was one of the last recorded all out offensives by the Klingons in Federation space prior to the Khitomer Accords in 2293.

Second USS Iliad

Ship Designation USS Iliad NCC8174
Class Constellation Class
Captain O'Connor
Dates in Service 2307 to 2319

The second USS Iliad was commissioned by Starfleet Command in 2294, almost immediately after the first Iliad's destruction as a tribute to the earlier ship. The second ship was a Constellation Class Ship similar to USS Stargazer which was Jean-Luc Picard's first command.

Constellation Class StarshipThis Iliad was built, again, at the San Francisco Fleet Yards on Earth and was launched in 2307. The Iliad was the first ship of its name to be designed for deep space exploration. The ship was similar in size to the original USS Enterprise but the class was based on the Miranda class starships. Again, the ship class has served Starfleet for over a hundred years and seen numerous re-designs although the basic appearance remains the same.

As one might imagine, being a deep space exploration vessel, USS Iliad saw more "action" than her illustrious predecessor, the ship was well armed and could certainly hold her own. Unfortunately, however, the exact details of her final days are still not known. She was found abandoned in the year 2319 in deep space near the planet of Barisa Prime where she had been instrumental in setting up the Federation colony on that planet. Captain O'Connor and her crew have never been heard from since. Many ideas have been put forward concerning the loss of her crew but so far no answers have been found. Starfleet salvaged the vessel and after a hand by hand search of the ship and following downloads of the ships data, they remain none the wiser. The fate of USS Iliad NCC8174 remains one of the Federations un-solved mysteries. The crew were all given post-humous awards but there are a growing number who feel that these awards are undeserved. Other rumours are now circulating that there is something more sinister concerning the loss of the crew, suggestions of a cover-up. Starfleet Command however are attributing these rumours to Cardassian agents on Earth.

Third USS Iliad

Ship Designation USS Iliad NCC27824
Class Excelsior Class
Captain Marr
Dates in Service 2322 to 2335

The third ship to bear the name USS Iliad was commissioned in 2310 and launched in 2322. The ship was initially due to be USS Hood but following the destruction of Iliad Mark II, the project and ship was re-named. This ship was again built at the San Francisco Fleet Yards. The ship was the first Federation Ship to explore and map the Cassan Argolii System during which time first contact was made with a number of new races, some of whom are optimistic of Federation Membership within the next few years.

Excelsior StarshipDuring the course of her voyages, Iliad's function turned mainly to exploration and peace making. She represented the Federation at a number of conferences as the Federation was asked to referee on a number of border disputes between other worlds. Her weapons were only fired in anger on one occasion. In 2331 whilst escorting the Torian Ambassador to Sela IV for the peace conference in the Selarian System, a rogue Norsandrian battle cruiser opened fire on the ship on which the Ambassador was travelling in an attempt to sabotage the peace conference. Despite many hails and orders to stand down, Captain Marr was left with no option other than to disable the attacking vessel.

Fourth USS Iliad

Ship Designation USS Iliad NCC62218
Class Ambassador Class
Captain Perrin
Dates in Service 2352 to 2359

The next ship to bear the name USS Iliad was commissioned in 2336. The Ambassador Class was initially a class intended to turn the war with the Klingons decisevely the way of the Federation. Following the peace treaty with the Klingons at Khitomer in 2293, however the Federation became more concerned with the Romulans. The Ambassador Class was therefore continued indefinately. The ship was initially due to be USS Hood but following the destruction of Iliad Mark III, the project and ship was re-named. This ship was again built at the San Francisco Fleet Yards.

Ambassador Starship

The USS Iliad served as a front-line vessel primarily patrolling the border with the Romulan Neutral Zone awaiting incursions that rarely happened as the Romulans kept themselves to themselves. The longer the Romulans kept quiet, Starfleet Command withdrew more and more vessels, Iliad was one of these and was redeployed to the Bajoran System where Iliad served as a front line ship.

The ship was destroyed in 2359 when Captain Perrin initiated the self-destruct. He had reported that his ship was being taken over by a foreign body in the Nakayev System. No other report of such an entity has been reported and it is believed that there was no such attack, but that instead the ship was the subject of a hallucinatory attack leading Perrin to believe that the ship was in danger and the order for self destruct was then given.

Current USS Iliad

Ship Designation USS Iliad NCC72000
Class Galaxy Class
Captain Karasov
Dates in Service 2375 to ?

The current USS Iliad, as before, was due to be another vessel, this time USS Stewart but after the destruction of Iliad "4", the ship was renamed Iliad.
