"But it's just a dragonknight we have enough around here and we don't clean the whole Keep for them." Said Roan, he was in a bad mood as he had been cleaning since dawn.
"Yes but it's the Cathairte of Cathair Utopian and maybe the Cathairix too and we want to impress them! You know we haven't been around long enough to get a good reputation." Said the Headwoman Raila.
"I...I didn't know it was the Cathairte." Roan exclaimed meekly, hanging his head.
"Well I can tell our rumour system isn't up and working yet." Raila said jovially in an attempt to brighten Roan up, he was like the son of the Keep, mischievous but essentially lovably like his idol Josl.
"Well I'll go and help clean the eating cavern then." Roan said with a deep sigh, resigning himself to the inevitable hard work.
"Get away with you Roan!" Said Raila with a mock growl.

Roan was whistling one of Josl's new songs with his flitter Korique chirping a harmony. The day hadn't gone too badly after all; he had been overseeing most of the cleaning and had actually done very little himself. And now that the cleaning was done and the food was being prepared Roan was doing his usual job of watching the roasting spit, which was hardly the most strenuous job around.
"What are you so chirpy about?" Asked his good friend Finus who was peeling vegetables on a table nearby.
"I don't know! I'm just in a happy mood I s'pose."
"After all this work?" Finus looked at him like he was mad.
Roan shrugged, he didn't feel like he'd done a fair share of the work, I don't try to avoid work, he thought, it's just people don't seem to give it to me. It was not really a problem for Roan, it wasn't that he was lazy he just liked having time to himself to do what he wanted.
Finally it was time, the feast was ready and dragons, a gold and a blue, had landed in the courtyard.
"Welcome Cathairte Inness and Huntrider K'dron, to Xanther Dragonkeep." Said Xanther's Keepleader Dee.
At the word "Huntrider" a wave of whispers ran through the younger members of the crowd, searchers were usually only addressed by their full title when they were performing their duties.
"Good day to you Keep Leader Dee." Replied Inness.
"We have a feast prepared so after a brief tour we shall head to the eating caverns for a banquet."
"Sounds wonderful but my Huntrider would like to have some time to look for candidates if that's okay by you. We are in need of some candidates worthy of white Kalorith's clutch."
"Certainly. Take your pick."
After the Cathairte and Keepleader walked off K'dron the Huntrider spoke up, "Okay," he said, "anybody who would like to have the chance to impress a dragon at Cathair Utopian could you please assemble over here."
Nearly all of the children and young people of the Keep formed a circle around the Huntdragon, including Roan, they were all familiar with the search procedure so it went smoothly, each person that stepped up to the dragon was rejected until Roan.
This one! In all Roan's life the only dragon who had spoken to him before now was Josl's Chirith and that was only the once, this was a shock. You would make a splendid candidate young human Roan.
"Oroth likes you!" K'dron said.
"I...I know, he said." Roan stuttered. It was not like Roan to be shy; he usually had a witty reply for every occasion.
"Meet me after the feast with your things." K'dron whispered, then continued his search.
Roan ran immediatly to his room to pack up his things then went down to the feast.
The food at the feast was amongst the best ever tasted at Xanther but Roan hardly noticed, his mind was not on the food, if I had not been scouted today I would have to wait two, maybe three more years to get a chance here. The clutches are small at the moment and I was hardly near the top of the list...
A hand appeared on his shoulder, "Congratulations!"
Roan turned and saw that the Keepleader of Xanther was standing behind him, "Good evening Keep Leader Dee."
"No need to be formal young Roan!" Dee laughed, "I know how excited you are, I am too and it's a pity to see you leave. The dragons saw your potential long ago, you know, especially Chirith, you could be a great Wing Leader some day."
"I didn't know that. Do you really think I could be a Wing Leader some day?"
"Here definitely but at Cathair Utopian I don't know. I hope one day you will return and take up that position here."
"Sure but I don't even know if I'll impress yet." Roan was a little uncertain now.
Dee laughed, "If you don't then it just means that the dragon destined to be with you is not there."
The Keepleader's words brightened Roan's spitit, she clearly thought he would impress one day and Keepleaders were seldom wrong about these things.
For the rest of the evening Roan was more relaxed, he even danced and took a turn playing the guitar even though his skills were limited to five chords. Soon the feast was over and well wishers came to see Roan off, he was the only person to be scouted from Xanther that day.
"Good one! Come back soon." Said Josl as he ruffled Roan's hair.
Roan's parents, in an unusual display of affection, came and hugged him.
"Good luck Roan." Said his mother Ralira.
"We know you'll impress," Said Lyam his father.
Then K'dron helped Roan onto his dragon Oroth.
"I assume you've been Parallel before."
"Yup."
"And we're off!" With that Oroth leaped into the air and went parallel.
