Abandoned by parents
outside the door of one of the many church sponsored orphanages in England,
during a period of late Renaissance times (1690), The mortal (later known to be
as Tycho) grew up for the first eleven years of his life as just another orphan
enslaved and manipulated by the corrupt church orphanage system. However, just
after he had turned eleven, he was on his way back to the orphanage, in the
usual phalanx of orphans gathered by a few priest "escorts" when a rotten piece
of the paved road collapsed into a fairly large, and fast flowing sewage line.
Many of the boys were also fell in with him. Eventually, the system of pipes
unceremoniously dumped him and the others into the mucky Thames
River. Getting off the banks of the river, it was a matter of everybody for themselves, dog eat dog world. Surviving on the "lower" streets of London was a very difficult chore. Surviving for three minutes without your money gone, your boots stolen, and a knife in your back was not an easy task, but the boy managed to do so, and slipped in through the back-ways of a particular "upper class" brothel. After a few humorous incidents, the boy was taken up by the head madam, and there and then, made into a house servant. Innocence, truth, justice and all of those other morals and sentiments are not something which stays forever. Most of us lose those kinds of things at adolescence, not when you are 11 years old. But inspite of what he learned by passing by a few choice doors, he did not immediately turn into a degenerate sex-crazed maniac, because of the various prostitutes there treating him like a little brother. In return for simple chores and a few extra luxuries, from getting their washing back to them in record time, to delivering presents from several wealthy clients to them earned him a small amount of money from many grateful well-wishers. When Tycho (He chose the name after a whole list was thrown at him by the madame. She just couldn't be bothered saying "here boy !" every five minutes or so.) got past the age of sixteen, he was already leaving all those precious shatterings of the areas of life behind. But a small plan emerged from his head. If there were all these rich men coming down to the brothel to be "serviced" , what was happening with their wives and daughters ? Well, after listening to the way some of the men talked, and easily catching a look at some of their clothes, of which one or two of them were "misplaced", he eventually got intimately acquainted with the airs of a "gentleman". He was also slightly more trained that most gentlemen. Music was an easy art which he picked up, especially the harpzichord, both of which were present at the brothel. Another easy art was lock-picking and picking pockets, which was easily accomplished with skilled long fingers which could also manipulate the keys of a harpzichord. A patron of the brothel who took a fond bearing to the young servant of the brothel also gave him some simplistic tutorship in the art of fencing, which was later emphasized by the cut-throat dagger techniques the bouncers of the brothel used. The actual act of being a thief was fairly simple. Sneak into a various party by becoming friends with a servant or maid, find the target who's spouse or father was off "being late at work", and pass himself as somewhat of an oddity with his handsome Oriental looks, seduce, then steal. While fairly simple sounding, he quickly learned that he would have to be extremely careful. You couldn't steal from the same target too much, or too many times, or else the goose would be cooked. And your feathers would end up being in a pillow somewhere. Also, being one of the very rare orientals in London was a uniqueness which he could do without. So, he came onto the plan of stealing from the visiting out-of-country nobles only. Curiousity wracked Tycho constantly about the truth of his parentage. Setting his network of contacts with the various servants and several aristocrats in the English parlours, courts and saloons, he discovered that his mother was an aristocrat, and his father a Chinese Slave, imported as a 'momento'. However, he never discovered who they actually were, just the watered-down rumours from a scandal long gone, presumed ended as their illicit child was never found. However, his career of choice was not picture perfect. There was one major problem. A minor son of another noble had stumbled apon the same plan after visiting some of these "service buildings" a few times. He and Tycho quickly became fast rivals, more or less. While the nobleman treated it like a game, unlike Tycho who mantained an edge because of the sheer amount of necessary survival of each and every endeavor. |
